Prostate Cancer Treatment at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.
Unlike conventional prostate radiation therapy that can take up to 40 sessions to treat prostate cancer, CyberKnife® is complete after only five treatments.
The prostate is a moving target as the bladder fills and empties of urine, which can affect the accuracy of radiotherapy. That’s where CyberKnife comes in.
Although it sounds like surgery, CyberKnife is a non-invasive treatment option that eradicates tumors in patients with prostate cancer. Using advanced imaging and robotics, CyberKnife delivers high doses of concentrated radiation to tumors from every possible angle. An innovative tracking system ensures the radiation remains locked in on the tumor, sparing nearby healthy tissue even when the prostate moves.

or recovery time.CyberKnife is not a surgical procedure,
so you won’t need to worry about
losing blood, caring for incisions,
or taking medication. -
Faster treatment completion.
You’ll receive five treatments over two weeks, whereas traditional radiation may require over 40 visits.
What to expect during CyberKnife therapy
-
1. Your initial consultation
The first time you meet with your CyberKnife team, they’ll explain how CyberKnife works, as well as the risks and benefits for your prostate cancer diagnosis.
-
2. Placement of markers
Your doctor will implant tiny metal markers, called fiducials, in or near your prostate tumor which will serve as targets for the CyberKnife radiation beams.
-
3. Imaging and mapping
Your cancer team will use a combination of MRIs, CT scans, and 3D technology to understand the size, shape, and location of your tumor. This results in a detailed picture that helps them plan radiation treatment aimed at your tumor without affecting the healthy tissue around it.
-
4. Treatment
You’ll receive five treatments over two weeks. During each CyberKnife treatment, you’ll change into a gown before laying down on a table. You can listen to an audiobook or music while a robotic arm moves around your body, delivering radiation directly to the tumor in your prostate. A tracking system monitors the position of the tumor, so you can breathe freely while CyberKnife beams remain on their target.
-
5. Side effects
During CyberKnife therapy, you won’t feel any pain. And, most patients can resume their daily activities immediately following treatment. Your doctor will recommend ways to minimize possible side effects.
-
6. Follow up
Once your treatment is complete, you’ll receive regularly scheduled PSA tests to see how well the tumor responded to the CyberKnife therapy. Then, your physician will review your results with you in great detail, answer any questions, and suggest next steps.
