Sean Curtin, MD

Dr. Curtin is a primary care physician, board-certified in internal medicine and fellowship trained in sports medicine.

He has more than two decades of experience in orthopaedics and sports medicine, specializing in the evaluation and management of non-surgical orthopaedic problems, ranging from simple fractures and complex sprains to overuse tendonitis and degenerative arthritis. Dr. Curtin also an expert in the evaluation and management of concussions and post-concussion syndrome. He treats disorders of the shoulders, elbows, hands, hips, knees, ankles, as well as the cervical and lumbar spine. He also conducts pre-participation sports physicals.

Frank Dawson, MD

Frank Dawson, MD

Frank Dawson MD, is a fellowship-trained sports medicine physician, specializing in sports related injuries. Dr. Dawson attended the University of Maryland, where he received his medical degree, and also completed his fellowship. He did a residency at Miami Children's Hospital.

Dr. Dawson is a part of MedStar Orthopaedics Institute. He sees patients at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. He is board certified by the American Board of Pediatrics. During his consultations, Dr. Dawson clearly explains sports injuries and helps athletes choose a personalized treatment plan for a full recovery.

Dr. Dawson is an associate team physician for the Baltimore Ravens, a team physician for Morgan State University, a sports medicine consultant for Baltimore City Public School System, and a member of Baltimore County Public School System's Head Injury Committee. Brendan Dempsey, MD, MS

Brendan Dempsey, MD, MS

Brendan Dempsey, MD, MS is a fellowship trained physician specializing in sports medicine. He sees his patients in Annapolis and at MedStar Harbor Hospital.

Dr. Dempsey is the head team physician for Goucher College, a team physician for Morgan State University, and a physician at MedStar Health Urgent Care.

As a sports medicine physician, Dr. Dempsey provides non-surgical care for active patients. From head to toe, he specializes in musculoskeletal injuries and non-operative orthopedic care.

Dr. Dempsey received his undergraduate degree from the University of Rochester and earned his medical degree from the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. He completed his Family Medicine Residency on the Sports Medicine Track with the Allegheny Health Network where he was elected Chief Resident.

He then went on to complete Sports Medicine Fellowship with the University of Maryland where he worked with the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, the Maryland Terrapins, UMBC Retrievers and the Coppin State Eagles.

He was named by the Pennsylvania Medical Society as a “Top 40 Physician Under 40.” He was inducted into AOA, the Medical Honors Society. He is also a member of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Family Physicians, and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.
Miranda Gordon-Zigel, MD

Miranda Gordon-Zigel, MD

Dr. Gordon-Zigel is a primary care physician, fellowship trained in sports medicine. Her scope of practice includes evaluation and treatment of upper and lower extremity injuries, tendinopathies and muscle injuries, concussion, fractures, and injection therapy (both anatomically and ultrasound guided). Most recently Dr. Gordon-Zigel completed a primary care sports medicine fellowship with the University of Maryland Medical System. During the fellowship, she worked with athletes of various levels, including the Baltimore Ravens and sports teams at the University of Maryland, College Park; University of Maryland Baltimore County, Coppin State University, Morgan State University, and McDonogh School. Dr. Gordon-Zigel also serves as a team physician for Stevenson University.

Kari Kindschi, MD

Kari Kindschi, MD, CAQSM, is board certified in family medicine and fellowship trained in sports medicine. She specializes in the nonoperative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and is an expert in medical issues that are specific to sports and exercise in athletes and active patients of all ages and skill levels. Through MedStar Sports Medicine, Dr. Kindschi is the medical director for Towson University Athletics. Dr. Kindschi is also the primary care sports medicine for the United States national women's U19 lacrosse team. She is also a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine.

Louis Kovacs, MD

Louis Kovacs, MD, is a primary care physician board certified in family medicine and fellowship trained in sports medicine. He practices at MedStar Orthopedics in Timonium, where he sees patients from childhood through adulthood for nonoperative orthopaedic and sport-related issues. Dr. Kovacs is the Medical Director and Team Physician for Towson University Athletics and Notre Dame of Maryland University Athletics. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine. He is an alumnus of St. John's College, Annapolis, where he was a member of the crew and croquet teams.

Jeffrey Mayer, MD

Jeffrey Mayer, MD

Jeffrey Mayer, MD, CAQSM, is a board-certified fellowship trained primary care sports medicine physician who treats athletes and active patients of all ages and skill levels. He sees patients at Waugh Chapel and MedStar Harbor Hospital. Dr. Mayer specializes in the non-operative treatment of musculoskeletal conditions, as well as medical issues that are specific to sports and exercise.

Dr. Mayer has vast experience treating athletes from a variety of sports. Currently, he is a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles (MLB); the Bowie Baysox (the Orioles’ AA affiliate); the Maryland Jockey Commission; and Arundel, Crofton, Chesapeake, Glen Burnie, Meade, North County, and Northeast high schools in Anne Arundel County. Furthermore, Dr. Mayer serves as a team physician for Mount Saint Joseph High School (class of 1999) and Archbishop Spalding High School. Dr. Mayer is also a medical consultant to the Maryland Black Bears (NAHL) and Team Maryland (the Black Bears’ EHL affiliate). Previously, he was a team physician for the Chesapeake Bayhawks (MLL) and the Washington Valor (AFL, now dissolved).

During his fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Maryland Medical System, he assisted the head team physician in the medical care of the Baltimore Ravens. Furthermore, he was an assistant team physician for the University of Maryland Terrapins, the UMBC Retrievers, and Coppin State University Eagles.

Dr. Mayer received his undergraduate degree from Boston College, and earned his medical degree at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed a residency in Family Medicine at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, NC and was elected Chief Resident.

He was board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine in 2011 and earned the Certificate of Added Qualification in Sports Medicine in 2012.

Kelly Ryan, DO

Kelly Ryan, DO

Kelly Ryan, DO, is board certified in Family Medicine and was fellowship trained in Primary Care Sports Medicine, with additional certification of qualification for care for the athletic population. Dr. Ryan specializes in treating concussions, orthopedic injuries, injury prevention, nutrition, and training needs of athletes. She is Co-Medical Director of the Horsemen’s Health Program at Maryland Racetracks, which is a collaboration between Medstar Sports Medicine, Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, Maryland Jockey Club and the Stronach group.

Dr. Ryan provides on-site medical care for the jockeys and horsemen including but not limited to acute and chronic injury care and prevention, as well as assistance with mental health concerns. In addition to providing care for all at the racetrack, Dr. Ryan treats family medicine, sports medicine and non-surgical orthopedic patients at the MedStar Franklin Square Family Health Center, MedStar Franklin Square Othopedic Institute and MedStar Urgent Care, and teaches residents as Sports Medicine Faculty, part of the Medstar Franklin Square Family Medicine Residency Program. She also is an Associate Professor at Georgetown Medical School, Team Physician for Towson University College, former Team Physician for the professional indoor arena football team, the Baltimore Brigade, and assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles.

Matthew Sedgley, MD

Matthew Sedgley, MD

Dr. Sedgley is a physician specializing in sports medicine. He is fellowship trained in both family medicine and sports medicine. His special interests include musculoskeletal injuries, evaluation of non-surgical orthopedic problems, and concussions. He is a team physician for the Baltimore Orioles, Baltimore Running Festival, and Howard County Community College. Dr. Sedgley's special interests include working with runners, triathletes, and bicyclists. He has served as the primary care sports medicine medical director of several marathons and ultra-marathons. He is also trained in sports medicine ultrasound. Non-operative care for orthopedic concerns and acute sports injuries are his primary focus.

Dr. Andrew Tucker is the Medical Director of MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Sports Medicine and co-Director of Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship. Dr. Tucker is a primary care physician, fellowship trained in sports medicine. His special interests include musculoskeletal injuries, evaluation of non-surgical orthopedic problems, and concussions.

David Cohen, MD

David Cohen, MD

David. Cohen, MD, is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon at the MedStar Orthopaedic Institute at Franklin Square Hospital. He specializes in sports medicine with a focus on shoulder and knee care for patients across all physical abilities and athletic levels.

Dr. Cohen uses the latest surgical techniques for procedures such as anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction, meniscal repair, and minimally invasive arthroscopy, reducing patients’ pain and downtime.

Taking a patient-focused approach to care, Dr. Cohen helps his patients understand their treatment options and works with them to meet their personal goals. Whether that’s returning to daily activities or getting back in the game, he creates custom treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific needs.

Elite athletes rely on Dr. Cohen’s expertise for prevention and treatment of ankle, knee, hip, and shoulder injuries. Dr. Cohen is the past Head Team Physician for the Baltimore Brigade. He is currently an Assistant Team Physician for the Baltimore Orioles and covers the Community College of Baltimore County Essex.

After earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia at Virginia Commonwealth University, Dr. Cohen completed his residency at Union Memorial Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in knee and shoulder arthroscopy at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute, where he served as a team physician for the University of Miami and Florida International University.

Dr. Cohen is an active member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, and the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine.

Dr. Cohen’s expertise and compassionate care earned him the prestigious recognition of Baltimore’s Top Doc for five consecutive years. One of the most rewarding aspects of his work is seeing the progression of his patients' athletic careers. He works with active people of all skill levels, from weekend warriors to student-athletes, college standouts, and elites. Leigh Ann Curl, MD

Leigh Ann Curl, MD

Dr. Leigh Ann Curl is the Chief of Orthopaedics at MedStar Harbor Hospital. As part of the MedStar Sports Medicine team, Dr. Curl is the head orthopaedic surgeon for the Baltimore Ravens. She has been with the Ravens since 1998.

In March 2018, she was elected President of the NFL Physicians Society. As president, Dr. Curl will help provide direction and support for the physicians and athletic trainers to ensure athletes receive the highest standard of medical and surgical care. In 2019, she was inducted into Robert “Tick” Cloherty - Western Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

In addition, she is currently assistant team physician for the Baltimore Orioles, and has also served as team physician for the University of Maryland Terrapins, the New York Mets, USA Women's Basketball, USA Women's Rugby, Johns Hopkins University and St. John's University in New York.

Dr. Curl is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery and a member of the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine. She is board certified and has trained at Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Hospital for Special Surgery. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Connecticut where she played collegiate basketball. Her expertise is sports-related injuries and complex conditions of the shoulder and knee.
James Dreese, MD

James Dreese, MD

James Dreese, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship-trained in sports medicine. He is double-board certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He serves as associate director of Union Memorial Sports Medicine and as research director for the MedStar Sports Medicine Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Fellowship. He was recently elected to serve as one of two delegates from the state of Maryland on the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Council of Delegates. He has served as editor-in-chief for the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and has been appointed to numerous regional and national leadership committees in Orthopedic Sports Medicine. He is actively involved in sports medicine research, and has published numerous articles and book chapters. Dr. Dreese is an associate team physician for the Baltimore Ravens. He serves as one of two delegates from the state of Maryland to the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine. He has been named numerous times to U.S. News and World Report's Top Doctors for Sports Medicine and Castle Connolly's Top Doctor Baltimore Edition. In 2021, Baltimore magazine named him a Top Doctor in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.

Dr. Dreese has clinical interest in conservative and surgical management of knee, shoulder, hamstring, and elbow injuries. His practice focuses on managing these injuries in athletes and the general population. His clinical practice uniquely focuses on non-joint replacement solutions for knee and shoulder injuries. He has extensive experience in managing complex ligamentous, meniscus, and cartilage injuries of the knee during the eight years he spent caring for Maryland Shock Trauma patients. He continues to frequently manage patients and athletes with complex knee injuries referred throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. As a result of the findings of his own and others' research, he adheres to strict principles of meniscal preservation rather than removal (meniscectomy) whenever feasible. For patients in whom meniscal preservation is not successful he offers extensive expertise in allograft meniscus transplantation. For more than 10 years Dr. Dreese has been performing a high volume of meniscus root repairs. This gives him unique ability and extensive expertise in the treatment of all types of meniscus injuries. Dr. Dreese has been invited as a guest lecturer at numerous state and regional meetings to speak about his extensive experience treating meniscus injuries. Dr. Dreese has extensive experience in managing ligamentous injuries of the knee, with expertise in determination of conservative vs surgical management. He performs high volumes of both bone-patellar tendon-bone and hamstring ACL reconstruction, promoting a joint discussion with patients and their families in deciding which option suits the individual patient. He also is experienced in performing anterolateral ligament reconstruction of the knee when risk of re-injury following ACL reconstruction is increased.

Dr. Dreese's particular areas of interest in the shoulder include rotator cuff tears, shoulder instability, SLAP tears, AC joint injuries, and biceps tendon injuries. In the knee, he focuses on ligament reconstruction (ACL, PCL, LCL/posterolateral corner), meniscus repair (meniscus root tears, bucket-handle tears, radial tears, etc.), cartilage restoration (fragmented juvenile cartilage transplantation and fresh osteochondral allograft transplantation) for localized arthritis, subchondral insufficiency fracture stabilization, patella instability surgery, patellofemoral pain syndrome, high tibial osteotomy, and nerve injuries around the knee. In particular, he focuses on operations to preserve the meniscus via repair in an effort to limit the risk of developing arthritis and the need for meniscus transplantation or joint replacement surgery. He has extensive experience in treating proximal hamstring injuries, specializing in conservative and surgical treatment for patients throughout the region.

Allison Fillar, MD

Allison Fillar MD

Allison Fillar, MD is fellowship trained and board-certified in orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. She specializes in reconstructive knee and shoulder surgery.

Dr. Fillar has cared for professional, collegiate, and high school athletic teams in New York and Maryland. She has conducted research on various topics including meniscal root injuries, patellar tendon repair techniques, treatment after Achilles tendon ruptures and has analyzed varying techniques for ACL reconstruction.

Dr. Fillar is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Arthroscopy Association of North America. She has been an invited instructor for arthroscopy courses at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. She teaches residents and fellows across the DC, Maryland and Virginia region.

Dr. Fillar's focus is on helping patients get back to the activities they love. She believes in building relationships with patients over time and works in partnership with each person to evaluate treatment options.

Jason Hammond, MD

Jason Hammond, MD

Jason Hammond, MD, is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon who is fellowship trained in sports medicine. His interest in sports medicine began while being treated for a track and field injury in high school. Dr. Hammond specializes in minimally invasive procedures of the shoulder and knee, including arthroscopic rotator cuff repair, arthroscopic shoulder stabilization, ACL reconstruction, and meniscus surgery. He is also proficient in knee replacement surgery, including outpatient partial knee replacements and and robotic knee replacement, also known as MAKOplasty.

In addition to traditional treatment, Dr. Hammond also offers a regenerative medicine technique that gently processes and uses your body's own fat tissue to cushion and support areas of injury or damage as your body heals itself.

Dr. Hammond has authored a number of published articles and book chapters. He has also spent time as an associate physician of several colleges and professional teams, including the Baltimore Ravens. He is now the head team physician for Towson University Men's Basketball and several other schools, including Gertstell Academy and Manchester Valley High School in Carroll County.

Richard Hinton, MD, MPH, PT, is the Medical Director of MedStar Sports Medicine, Division Director for Sports Medicine MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, and past Director of the MedStar Sports Medicine Fellowship Program.

Dr. Hinton's practice is concentrated on knee and shoulder conditions and involves athletes at the recreational, scholastic, collegiate, and professional levels of play. Dr. Hinton specializes in ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction and revision surgery, patellofemoral instability, shoulder instability and rotator cuff injuries. He has a special interest in pediatric and adolescent sports medicine, including ACL injuries and osteochondritis dissecans.

Having trained at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of Virginia, Dr. Hinton began his sports medicine career as a physical therapist and certified athletic trainer. He then received his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and residency training in orthopaedic surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He completed fellowship training in both pediatric orthopaedic surgery and adult sports medicine at these same institutions. He then received his Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University, with a concentration in epidemiology and injury prevention.

Dr. Hinton has served as a team physician for the Baltimore Ravens, Towson University, Loyola University, Morgan State University, the U.S. National Lacrosse Teams, and a number of scholastic and youth organizations. He is Co Chair of the NFL's Research and Innovations Committee, one of 14 members of the NFL's Health and Safety Oversight Committee, and is an executive member of US Lacrosse's Sports Science Committee. He is the Director of the nation's leading lacrosse-specific sports medicine program located at USA Lacrosse and MedStar Health. He has served as president of the Maryland Orthopaedic Association, held membership on various AOSSM committees, and served on the Maryland Board of Physicians Athletic Trainers Oversight Committee.

Dr. Hinton has authored numerous articles in the areas of injury epidemiology, lacrosse sports medicine, ACL injury and reconstruction, and knee conditions in the skeletally immature. He is frequently invited to speak at regional and national medical meetings, as well as public conferences focused on youth sports medicine.

Dr. Levine graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in 1991. While at Cornell, he played Division 1 soccer and lacrosse. He completed his medical school training at the State University of New York Downstate College of MedicineÂ in 1995 and completed his residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2000. Dr. Levine then moved to Baltimore, where he completed his fellowship training in sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital 2001.

Dr. Levine has served as a National Football League team physician for the Baltimore Ravens since 2004. His responsibilities include on-field game and training room coverage, pre-and post-season physical exams, pre-season camp coverage, and yearly evaluations at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis.

Baltimore Blast fans will also recognize Dr. Levine from the sidelines of MASL professional men's indoor soccer, where he has served as Head Team Physician for the Baltimore Blast since 2001 and is responsible for all aspects of player care.

Dr. Levine also serves as the head orthopedic surgeon for Towson University, Goucher College, and Notre Dame of Maryland University, where he provides care to student-athletes and is a fixture on the sidelines and in the stands during games.

Milford Marchant Jr., MD, has extensive clinical expertise in treating a wide variety of sports-related injuries and arthritis of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee. He specializes in the non-operative and operative treatment of injuries in adult and youth patients of all skill levels, from recreational to professional athletes. He emphasizes patient education and the importance of injury prevention and rehabilitation.

During his fellowship at the world-renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic, Dr. Marchant assisted the head team physician in the orthopaedic care of the 2009 World Champion Los Angeles Lakers. In addition, he served as an assistant team physician for the Los Angeles Dodgers, Los Angeles Kings, Los Angeles Sparks, Anaheim Ducks, and Fullerton College, and served as the head team physician for the Major League Lacrosse Chesapeake Bayhawks.

Dr. Kenneth Tepper is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in sports medicine who sees patients in Pikesville, Hunt Valley, and in Westminster. He is one of only a few surgeons nationwide who perform hip arthroscopy.

Dr. Tepper is the medical director for athletics at Stevenson University and is also medical staff for the USA Men's U-21 lacrosse team. He served Associate Chief Medical Officer of the 2018 Men's World Lacrosse Championship in Netanya, Israel.

Dr. Pothast is a native of Ohio and earned his undergraduate degree in exercise biology from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. S. Mohammed Karim, MD is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who is dual fellowship trained in spine surgery and orthopaedic oncology—one of only a handful of surgeons nationwide with such training and experience. He specializes in the surgical treatment of patients with bone and soft tissue tumors / cancers. After practicing at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, Dr. Karim returned to his home state and now sees patients at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center and MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Karim enjoys helping patients with sarcomas, cutaneous / skin cancers, and metastatic tumors in soft tissues and bones throughout the entire body including the spine, sacrum, pelvis, and extremities. He also performs surgery for spinal cord compression, spinal instability from primary and metastatic tumors, and pathologic or impending fractures from metastatic bone disease. In addition to orthopaedic cancer patients, he surgically treats those with degenerative spine conditions, spinal trauma, spinal cord injuries, and spinal infections. Dr. Karim works closely with medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, pathologists, radiologists, plastic surgeons, and other surgical subspecialists of MedStar Health to provide the best treatment possible to each patient.

In addition to caring for patients, Dr. Karim conducts clinical research to improve the outcomes of patients with musculoskeletal and spinal tumors. Dr. Moatz, who completed one of the nation’s top-ranked spine fellowships at Emory University, is an accomplished author who has earned many academic honors. Ryan Hoffman, MD

Dr. Ryan A. Hoffman is a fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in shoulder & elbow reconstruction. He sees patients at our MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Federal Hill, and Frederick locations.

He grew up in the Philadelphia area, attending medical school at Drexel University. In medical school, he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society and earned numerous awards for scholastic and clinical achievement. Afterwards, Dr. Hoffman remained in Philadelphia to complete orthopedic residency training at Einstein Healthcare Network. There, he was elected Administrative Chief resident and was the winner of the 22nd annual John R. Gregg Memorial Resident Bowl awarded by the Philadelphia Orthopedic Society. He then travelled to Providence, Rhode Island to complete a shoulder & elbow fellowship at Brown University. In addition, Dr. Hoffman completed training at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in reconstructive shoulder and elbow surgery.

Experienced in the latest surgical techniques, Dr. Hoffman has advanced training in shoulder and elbow replacements, shoulder and elbow arthroscopy, cupper extremity fractures, rotator cuff repairs with and without biologic augmentation, tendon transfers for the shoulder, joint salvage, joint preservation, and sports injuries of the shoulder and elbow.

Dr. Hoffman is a former shoulder surgery patient himself. This experience led him to provide an individualized approach centered on his patients. He works with each patient to develop a personalized treatment plan, taking their preferences and needs into account.

In addition to his day-to-day medical practice, Dr. Hoffman is an accomplished researcher with numerous published book chapters and peer reviewed manuscripts in shoulder and elbow surgery. He has had several presentations and lectures on regional, national, and international levels. Dr. Hoffman is a member of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society, Arthroscopic Association of North America, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He is also an editor for several medical journals, including Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery and Journal of Orthopedic Surgery and Research.

Dr. Hoffman enjoys teaching and serves as an educator for the MedStar Union Memorial Orthopedic Surgery residency program and as the Associate Director of the MedStar Shoulder & Elbow Fellowship.

As an elite collegiate wrestler, Dr. Hoffman competed in multiple national tournaments and medaled in the Junior Olympic Games. As a result, Dr. Hoffman is uniquely situated to understand the needs of the competitive athlete and difficulties they can encounter. He is currently a team physician with USA Wrestling. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, snowboarding, working out, and spending time with family and friends.

Anand Murthi, MD

Anand Murthi, MD

Dr. Anand Murthi is the Chief, Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, where he also serves as the Director of the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship and Research. He is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in shoulder and elbow surgery, who sees patients in Timonium (Baltimore County) and in Baltimore at MedStar Union Memorial.

Dr. Murthi received his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine and completed his general surgery internship and orthopaedic surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center. He completed the internationally recognized fellowship in shoulder and elbow reconstruction at the New York Orthopaedic Hospital-Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. He is the current section editor for the journal “Current Orthopaedic Practice.” He also sits on the editorial board of the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Arthroplasty. He has published and presented numerous research papers on a national and international stage. As a teacher he has been involved in teaching physicians around the country surgical techniques in shoulder and elbow surgery. He is former president and founding member of the Association of Clinical Elbow and Shoulder Surgeons (ACESS) group. He is also an elected member of the prestigious American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons Society (ASES), an international group of shoulder and elbow surgeons dedicated to the mission of teaching and research for which he has chaired the Education Committee. Recently he was elected to the Neer Circle of ASES. He currently is a co-chairman of the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society which holds an annual regional scientific meeting.

Dr. Murthi has been involved in the development of numerous implants for clinical care. These include total shoulder and reverse shoulder replacement, pyrocarbon resurfacing humerus, proximal humerus fracture plate, clavicle plating system and others. Currently he is involved in designing for robotic assisted shoulder replacement. He and his colleague have also designed the first international shoulder data registry (Shoulder JAM by OBERD).

He is currently the fellowship director for the MedStar Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship program which trains future shoulder specialists. He also directs the Shoulder and Elbow Research programs which is a highly productive clinical, biomechanical, and translational program with numerous publications.

Jason Stein, MD

Jason Stein, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in shoulder and elbow surgery, who sees patients in Timonium (Baltimore County), Ellicott City (Howard County), Bel Air (Harford County), Hunt Valley (Baltimore County), Westminster (Carroll County), and in Baltimore at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He trained at the prestigious Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis with Ken Yamaguchi and Leesa Galatz. Dr. Stein has vast experience in the latest surgical techniques, from arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and elbow to total shoulder and reverse shoulder replacement. He specializes in all disorders of the shoulder and elbow including arthritis, instability, rotator cuff tears, and throwing injuries.

Dr. Stein specializes in both conventional and reverse total shoulder replacements. He performs these at both MedStar Union Memorial Hospital and at the MedStar Surgery Center at Timonium. Most of these replacements are able to be performed as outpatient surgery and his patients are able to go home the same day as surgery.

Dr. Stein performs numerous arthroscopic rotator cuff repairs including arthroscopic subscapularis repairs, massive rotator cuff repairs, and revision rotator cuff repairs. He performs primary arthroscopic instability surgery of the shoulder as well as revision arthroscopic and open shoulder instability including the Latarjet procedure for patients with bone loss and multiple shoulder dislocations. He also performs pectorals major repairs.

A large portion of Dr. Stein's practice includes shoulder and elbow trauma including clavicle fractures, shoulder separations, proximal humerus fractures, humeral shaft fractures and complex elbow fractures and dislocations. Dr. Stein treats patients with the spectrum of the latest techniques including nonoperative treatment, open reduction internal fixation and reverse total shoulder for fracture and elbow replacement for fracture. He performs both primary and complex elbow surgery and reconstruction including distal biceps repairs, ligament reconstruction (including Tommy John surgery for throwing injuries), total elbow replacement, revision total elbow replacement and periprosthetic (near a previous replacement) shoulder and elbow fractures.

Dr. Stein also specializes in joint preservation surgery for both the shoulder and elbow. This includes shoulder and elbow arthroscopic cartilage transplantation surgeries to prevent or delay joint replacement. In fact, most patients with elbow arthritis can be treated without elbow replacement.

William Baugher, MD

William Baugher, MD

Dr. Baugher is an orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in hand and upper extremity surgery. He specializes in sports medicine, shoulder, hand, wrist, and arthroscopy.

Dr. Baugher received his medical degree from the University of Virginia Medical School. He completed his general surgery training at Barnes Hospital, Washington University, and his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia. He completed a fellowship in sports medicine at the Hospital for Special Surgery, Cornell University Medical College, as well as a hand surgery fellowship at NYU-Bellevue and Cabrini Hospitals.

Dr. Baugher is an attending hand surgeon and consultant for outpatient clinics and surgical cases with the residents and fellows. He is the attending surgeon for the Upper Extremity Clinic at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. He is actively involved in direct surgical education and didactic lectures. Dr. Baugher specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy of the shoulder, hand, and wrist. He serves as team physician for Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland Baltimore County.

Aviram Giladi, MD

Aviram Giladi, MD, MS is a fellowship trained hand and upper extremity surgeon at The Curtis National Hand Center, and holds an appointment as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Georgetown University and in the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University. He is the Research Director for The Curtis National Hand Center and Scientific Director for Orthopedics at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He sees patients at The Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr. Giladi’s published research includes work on surgical outcomes, measuring post-traumatic impairment and disability, Medicaid expansion, delivery of upper extremity surgical care, trauma systems and networks, and how these elements affect care implementation and policy. As Research Director, he coordinates basic science, animal, biomechanics, and clinical outcomes studies through the Hand Center, as well as collaborative efforts across specialties and institutions. His clinical focus is on upper extremity trauma, wrist fractures, nerve and vascular problems, arthritis care, and care for patients with amputations. He is surgical lead for the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Fracture Liaison Service. His ongoing academic work centers on the interaction between upper extremity treatment outcomes, patient satisfaction, care delivery and costs, and how these various elements contribute to measuring quality and value. He also leads clinical trials on managing nerve pain (neuromas) after amputations as well as big data studies aimed at preventing opioid addiction. He has received research grant funding from the Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, and the American Society for Surgery of the Hand.

Dr. Giladi is board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery. He is involved with many professional societies, is a Candidate Member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, and is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, American Association for Hand Surgeons, and the Plastic Surgery Research Council.

Dr. Giladi completed his medical degree at Vanderbilt University and his integrated plastic and reconstructive surgery residency at The University of Michigan. During his residency, he completed a Master’s in Health and Health Care Research through the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar’s Program at the University of Michigan. He then completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship in the Department of Orthopaedics at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, within the Harvard Combined Orthopedic Training Programs.

James Higgins, MD

Dr. James Higgins is Chief of The Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Dr. Higgins specializes in complex reconstruction after trauma, microsurgery, congenital hand surgery as well as fractures and disorders of the arm and wrist. He is fellowship trained in hand surgery and board certified in plastic surgery.

Dr. Higgins is recognized as a leading surgeon in the field and a sought-after national and international presenter and visiting professor. His numerous research studies and clinical trial research projects are published in prestigious peer-reviewed medical journals. While treating commonplace hand conditions he has been recognized as a leader in complex areas of hand surgery including microsurgery, hand replantation and transplantation, and wrist reconstruction.

Dr. Higgins believes in treating all patients in the same way that he would treat a family member. His dedication to patient care and compassion led him to be named a Top Doctor by Baltimore Magazine and a Super Doctor by The Washington Post.

Each year the two largest national scientific organizations of hand and microsurgery select a travelling ambassador surgeon from among their ranks of thousands of surgeons around the globe. Dr Higgins has served as the selected ambassador and travelling fellow for each of these groups. In 2010 Dr. Higgins served as the Godina travelling fellow for the American Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery. In 2013 he then served as the Sterling Bunnell travelling fellow for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand. Dr Higgins is one of only two surgeons globally who have ever received both of these prestigious accolades.

Dr. Katz is a hand surgeon who specializes in complex reconstructions and microvascular surgery. He is board certified in plastic and reconstructive surgery and fellowship trained in hand surgery.

Dr. Katz was named a Baltimore magazine Top Doctor in 2013.Dr. Katz graduated cum laude from Duke University as an undergraduate, with a BS in biology and a BA in economics. He attended the University of Maryland Medical School, and graduated summa cum laude in 2002. He completed his plastic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital in 2009 and his hand surgery fellowship at the Curtis National Hand Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in July 2010.

Dr. Katz's primary interests include microsurgery, complex soft tissue and bone reconstruction, nerve and vascular disorders, fractures of the upper extremity, nerve compression and limb salvage. He is committed to teaching and is involved in the microsurgical training program, guiding fellows and residents through dissection, laboratory sessions and lecture.

Kenneth Means, Jr., MD

Kenneth Means, Jr., MD

Dr. Kenneth Means, Jr. is an orthopaedic hand surgeon who sees patients in Baltimore and Ellicott City. He is the Vice Chief and Clinical Research Consultant at the Curtis National Center at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Means is a fellowship-trained, board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, and holds the Certificate of Added Qualification for Surgery of the Hand from the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is the hand/upper extremity consultant for multiple sports teams including the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, Towson University, Morgan State University, Stevenson University, and many other local and regional schools.

Dr. Means specializes in hand, wrist, forearm, and elbow conditions, including fractures, dislocations, and nerve/tendon/ligament/blood vessel injuries; upper extremity nerve compression, including carpal and cubital tunnel syndromes; Dupuytren's contracture; trigger finger; and arthritis and other issues affecting these areas. Dr. Means uses both nonsurgical and surgical treatment options for patients.

At the Curtis National Hand Center, Dr. Means is involved in academic activities including research, grants acquisition, lecturing, book and journal publication, and education of fellows and residents from MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Johns Hopkins University Hospital, and the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. He has received Golden Apple teaching awards from the MedStar Union Memorial Hospital Orthopedic Surgery Residency and from the Curtis National Hand Center Hand/Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship. Dr. Means was also part of the inaugural international hand mission with Operation Smile.

Dr. Means attended a 7-year accelerated B.S./M.D. program at TSC-UMDNJ-NJMS, now TCNJ-Rutgers-NJMS, and then completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, MD. He did additional fellowship training in hand and upper extremity surgery at the Curtis National Hand Center.

Dr. Guyton is the Division Chief of Foot and Ankle Surgery, and the Fellowship Director, at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. Walter Hembree, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in foot and ankle surgery. He sees patients in Pikesville, Frederick, at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, at MedStar Harbor Hospital, and at MedStar Franklin Square Hospital.

Dr. Hembree’s treatment philosophy is to assist patients in making informed, evidence-based decisions about their care, and to only use surgery as a last resort option. Stuart Miller, MD

Stuart Miller, MD

Dr. Miller is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon, fellowship trained in foot and ankle reconstruction. He maintains a busy teaching practice with residents and fellows at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital. He also sees patients in Westminster, in Caroll County. He has extensive experience with ankle joint replacements and has a choice of appropriate implant systems. Dr. Miller also has performed many ankle fusion procedures. Dr. Miller has over 20 years of experience with complex ankle and calcaneal fractures. He enjoys ankle arthroscopy and treatment of osteochondral lesions of the talus. Dr. Miller treats forefoot problems such as bunions and hammertoes; he has developed joint preserving techniques for arthritis of the big toe. He enjoys reconstruction for posterior tibial tendonitis and flat foot reconstruction.
