About me
Alex Koo, MD is a board-certified Emergency Medicine physician at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and St. Mary's Hospital. He is the Simulation/Education Liaison and part of the Residency Leadership Team of Georgetown Emergency Medicine Residency.
He is an Associate Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at Georgetown University and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS).
Dr. Koo received his undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia, and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Madigan Army Medical Center. During his residency, he was nominated and selected as the 2018 Emergency Medicine Residents' Association 'Resident of the Year'.
Dr. Koo is well-published nationally and internationally with expertise in military medicine, exertional heat illness, simulation, trauma, and metacognition. He is a peer reviewer for Annals of Emergency Medicine and serves on ACEP's Education Meetings Subcommittee. He speaks nationally on selected, educational topics, and was selected as 'Junior Faculty of the Year' and 'Faculty of the Quarter' by the Georgetown Emergency Medicine Residency.
As an Army veteran, MAJ Koo served in operational conventional and unconventional roles. He specialized in medical simulation, residency education, and operational medicine in Forward Resuscitative Surgical Detachments and mechanized infantry units. He was the Simulation Director for the Madigan Army Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency and Deputy Medical Director for Andersen Simulation Center. During his service, he was awarded two Meritorious Service Medals, the Armed Forces Service Medal, and Air Assault Badge.
He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) and American Academy of Emergency Medicine (AAEM).
