Joshua Biro, PhD

Joshua Biro, PhD, is a research scientist at the MedStar Health National Center for Human Factors in Healthcare. His research interests include medication safety, implementation science, and artificial intelligence. In addition to his expertise in cognitive systems engineering, he has published in the prestigious British Journal of Anaesthesia on patient safety and medication errors in anesthesia. Dr. Biro has received funding from the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality to investigate artificial intelligence applications in primary care. Dr. Biro supports several projects designed to improve medication safety and reduce health inequities. Dr. Biro received his Doctorate in Industrial Engineering from Clemson University in 2023 and holds an M.S. in Industrial Engineering and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University and the University of Maryland, College Park, respectively. Josh enjoys live music, hiking, and going to the theater during his free time.

Joshua Biro is a member of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

Selected Research

Investigating the Impact of AI on Clinician Patient Portal Messaging Behavior (MedStar New Investigator Grant): This research aims to assess whether AI can safely reduce the cognitive burden of the patient portal messaging experience.

Guiding the Safe and Effective Integration of Ambient Digital Scribes into Primary Care (AHRQ R03 Award # 1R03HS030307-01): This work aims to develop a prototype guide to assist healthcare provider organizations of all sizes safely and effective integrate ambient AI scribes into primary care.
