MedStar Launches New Primary Care Curriculum in Partnership with the Georgetown University School of Medicine
WASHINGTON, D.C. (August 25, 2016)— A group of medical students from Georgetown University School of Medicine will spend the first six months of their third year of medical school at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center as part of a new shared curriculum that satisfies the students’ clinical rotations requirements in an innovative, patient-centered way.
Traditionally, the third year of medical school requires students to engage in back-to-back rotations covering six core elements of medicine. These rotations range from one-to-three months at a time at various hospitals within different departments, but the new MedStar Health offering pairs students with patients and runs the rotations simultaneously.
Over the 24-week period, the students will spend the equivalent of eight weeks of internal medicine, four weeks of family medicine and six weeks each of pediatrics and OB-GYN; however, instead of back-to-back, they do all at once.
Matthew Stein, who is part of the first cohort of students enrolled in the curriculum says, “What excites me the most about the LIC [longitudinal integrated curriculum] is the opportunity to be so involved in patient care so early in my clinical career. We have a set of our own patients that we get to follow and take a majority of the responsibility for, which is both a huge privilege, as well as a great confidence builder in the skills that Georgetown has taught us so well.”
The collaboration among Georgetown University’s School of Medicine and MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center also provides medical students exposure to its primary care residency offerings.
