The surgeons at MedStar Health have the expertise necessary to restore your shoulder function, no matter how complex your condition. Our surgeons have fellowship training in shoulder surgery and focus exclusively on shoulder procedures. We specialize in performing open Bankart shoulder repair, as well as revising previously unsuccessful procedures. If you had your original surgery done elsewhere and are not satisfied with your results, we can work with you to improve your outcome.
What is open bankart repair?
Used to treat conditions such as shoulder dislocations or instability, open Bankart repair helps stabilize the ball back into the socket of the shoulder joint. In this procedure, your orthopedic surgeon will repair damaged ligaments and cartilage through an incision in the front of your shoulder. For some patients, our surgeons may recommend a minimally invasive option called arthroscopic bankart repair.
Why is open bankart repair performed?
You may be a good candidate if you suffer from severe shoulder instability and have not found relief from medication, physical therapy, or other non-surgical techniques. We also often use this method to help patients who have previously had unsuccessful shoulder surgery. Open Bankart repair surgery is usually used to treat severe shoulder conditions, such as:
What does surgery involve?
Before your procedure, we take time to discuss the entire procedure and what to expect. We listen to your concerns, answer your questions, and discuss the most advanced and effective treatment options. We will help you find your best treatment plan to help you regain strength and function in your shoulder.
What does recovery involve?
After surgery, you will generally wear your arm in a sling for three to four weeks. You will also have physical therapy treatment for one to four months following surgery to regain strength and range of motion in your arm. Typically, we will advise you to avoid contact sports for about six months after surgery. Your orthopedic surgeon will discuss any further recovery details with you before your procedure.
What are the benefits?
Our goal is for you to experience the following benefits after surgery:
- Shoulder pain relief
- Restored range of motion in the shoulder
- Improved shoulder strength and balance
- Improved shoulder stability
- Ability to return to normal activities
