The radial nerve runs along the back of the arm, from the armpit to the tips of the fingers. It is responsible for controlling the extension of the arm and hand. When a patient is suffering from radial nerve neuropathy, or radial neuropathy, they will experience symptoms like pain, burning, itching, tingling, and numbness in the arm, wrist, and hand. Some patients also lose mobility or extension in the arm, elbow, wrist, or fingers. Radial nerve neuropathy occurs when the radial nerve is damaged or pinched due to trauma (from a broken arm or accident for example), certain prolonged repetitive motions, or other conditions (like diabetes or lead poisoning).
If the symptoms are believed to be caused by another disorder, doctors will look to treat the patient’s underlying disease while also treating the symptoms of radial nerve neuropathy. The most common treatments for radial nerve neuropathy include physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medication, topical pain relievers, muscle relaxers, injection therapy for pain, anticonvulsants, and specific antidepressants. In some cases, when the nerve is compressed or severely damaged, the patient may need to undergo surgery.
