Larry L. Smith is vice president of risk management for MedStar Health and president of MedStar Health's captive insurance company, Greenspring Financial Insurance Limited, Inc. of Cayman. In his role, he is responsible for the design, implementation and administration of MedStar Health's broad comprehensive risk management, self-insurance and commercial insurance program.
Prior to joining MedStar Health in 2001, Smith was the vice president and chief risk officer for UCSF-Stanford Health Care in San Francisco, California. There he designed and oversaw the insurance and self-insurance program established to meet the needs of a large, complex integrated healthcare delivery system that combined the academic and community healthcare programs of both Stanford University and the University of California Medical Center at San Francisco.
Smith served for a number of years as executive vice president and general counsel of Tufts Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. As its general counsel, he served as chief legal advisor to the center's board, its senior management and medical staff leadership.
A member of the Massachusetts and California Bars, Smith has served as a member of various corporate boards, and is currently a member of the board of the Captive Insurance Council of the District of Columbia.
Smith is frequently invited to present at national professional conference on topics that include professional liability, risk financing, claims management and error prevention strategies. He was the recipient of the Medical Society of the District of Columbia's 2005 John Benjamin Nichols Award for his contributions toward improving the health of the Washington, D.C., community. During that same year, he was awarded the Maryland Hospital Association Award for his expertise in the development of medical liability reform initiatives and his work on the medical liability crisis in Maryland.
