About me
Board-certified in Gastroenterology and Internal Medicine, Jill Smith, MD, specializes in liver disease—especially Hepatitis B and C plus inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s disease and ulcerativecolitis. Dr. Smith is known for her deep “bench to bedside” expertise, translating more than 25 years of research into innovative patient care. She often sees patients for whom previous treatments have failed and patients seeking alternative approaches to care.
Dr. Smith has also worked extensively with the FDA to develop new drugs, develop target-specific therapy and repurpose older, still effective drugs to keep medical costs down. Prior to MedStar Georgetown, she served as Director of Clinical and Translational Research at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases at the National Institutes of Health and is the past President of the American Pancreatic Association.
Dr. Smith also holds a number of patents. As Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University and Professor Emeritus at Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, she is actively involved in mentoring students and other doctors. Dr. Smith is also the recipient of numerous awards for patient care, research and teaching.
Dr. Smith plays guitar in a musical band and has recorded live in the House of Blues in Chicago and Orlando. She is involved in prison ministry where she also plays her guitar to a “captive” audience. Dr. Smith leads a very active life. She has reached the summit of Mt. Whitney and Mt Rainier and also ran the Boston marathon. She is happily married to a urologist and has four children.
