About me
May Wheelwright, MSN, CNM, is a midwife at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. She is part of a team that provides full-scope midwifery care, including well-woman care, contraceptive counseling, preconception family planning, prenatal care, labor and birth support, and postpartum care. She is proud of the fact that MedStar Washington follows a “baby friendly” initiative that broadens the scope of specialists women have access to, like lactation consultants.
May received a Master of Science in Nursing at the University of California, Los Angeles, before completing a Master of Science in Nurse-Midwifery at Frontier Nursing University.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Wesleyan University. Before joining Midwives of MedStar, she worked as a labor and delivery nurse for nine years at Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles and then MedStar Washington Hospital Center.
She first became interested in women’s health while studying the folklore of pregnancy during her study abroad program in Venezuela. May is fluent in Spanish.
Philosophy of Care
“My role is to educate, listen, and review choices. When women fully understand their options, they’re able to make the best choices for themselves and their families.
“Women’s health is tightly linked to the health of society because of the role women play in families. For this reason, a large part of my practice involves understanding each woman as a whole, emotionally and psychologically, in addition to her physical well being.
“As a mom of two, I understand that each birth is unique. Having practiced labor and delivery in two different parts of the country, I have gained perspective and experience that influence my current practice.”
