About me
Nico Mata, MD, is dual board-certified in pain medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. As a dedicated pain physician, his ultimate goal is to help individuals regain function and enhance their quality of life.
He believes that effective pain management stems from a multifaceted strategy that employs various modalities working together to address pain from multiple angles. His approach emphasizes proper body movement through physical therapy and home exercise regimens; the importance of nutrition, hydration, and sleep; and the essential role played by mental health awareness and stress management as the core foundations for successful treatment and management.
While prioritizing these conservative treatments, Dr. Mata also integrates advanced, image-guided procedures and modern technologies to reduce pain and enhance function. He is also well versed in the risks and benefits of a wide variety of pain medications and is a strong believer in safe and appropriate use of these tools.
Dr. Mata offers a full range of consultative, evaluative, and interventional treatments for acute and chronic pain, including conditions affecting the spine, neck, back, and peripheral joints (such as knees, hips, shoulders, wrists, etc). In addition, with his fellowship training, he provides specialized treatment in fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided procedures, sympathetic nerve blocks, CRPS management, painful diabetic neuropathy, and spinal cord stimulator placement.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Mata has co-authored numerous book chapters and peer-reviewed publications. He was selected by his peers as Chief Resident during his training and is an active member of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Dr. Mata joins MedStar Health after a successful career at All Star Pain Management in Annapolis.
Whether striving for complete resolution of pain or learning to manage it more effectively, Dr. Mata is committed to supporting his patients on their journey toward improved function and quality of life.
