About me
Shawn Tejiram, MD is an attending surgeon at The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center in the Division of Trauma and Burn Surgery.
Dr. Tejiram specializes in burn injury, thermal injury to the skin, cold injury to the skin, electrical and chemical injuries, trauma to the skin, complex wounds, and major skin disorders with resultant skin loss such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis that requires significant wound care and ICU level care.
Dr. Tejiram received his Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Biomedical Sciences from the University of South Florida in 2008. He returned to complete his medical degree at the Morsani College of Medicine at the University of South Florida in 2012. From there, he completed his General Surgery residency at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center in 2018. During his residency, he participated in a research fellowship at the Firefighter’s Burn and Surgical Research Laboratory at The Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center where he developed his interest in burn injury and burn related care. From there, he went to northern California to pursue a Burn Surgery Fellowship at the University of California Davis Medical Center and Shriners Hospitals for Children Northern California. He then followed this up with additional training in a second fellowship in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care at the University of California Davis Medical Center.
It was during his time as a research fellow at The Burn Center that Dr. Tejiram developed an interest in burn related care. He had the opportunity to study blood clot formation in burned patients and observed changes in scar healing following pressure therapy. His other research projects included examining the safety profile of transfusion strategies in pediatric burn patients and used machine learning as a new technique to examine utilization during massive transfusion activations in trauma. Experiences like these have culminated in an extensive list of published academic work, including multiple manuscripts, book chapters, and academic presentations both domestically and internationally. He has been published in many reputable journals such as the Journal of Burn Care and Research, Journal of Surgical Research, and Surgical Infections. He is an active member of the American Burn Association.
Dr. Tejiram hopes that these experiences will help contribute to furthering advancements and new developments in burn care for burn injured patients.
Philosophy of Care
“During my training taking care of burn injured patients, I appreciated the multidisciplinary approach necessary to ensure good outcomes and healing following burn injury. I realized the acute surgical management, critical care, reconstruction, and rehabilitation of burn injured patients must all work in tandem during all parts of a patient’s care.
I remain dedicated to my patients to ensure that they receive the care that they need. I cannot do it alone - I am grateful to the multidisciplinary team that assists me with caring for every burn injured patient that comes through our program. We believe in a wholistic approach to care and recovery after these devastating injuries.”
