About me
Sonya Alekseyev, FNP, is the Lead Advanced Practice Provider in vascular surgery at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Health at Lafayette Centre. Ms. Alekseyev is a board-certified family nurse practitioner who provides comprehensive care to patients with cardiovascular health problems and illnesses. She is able to diagnose and manage arterial and venous diseases such as aortic aneurysms, carotid stenosis, peripheral arterial disease, deep vein thrombosis and many others. She also provides cosmetic and non-cosmetic treatment for venous diseases related to varicose and spider veins. She is a member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
Ms. Alekseyev is committed to a holistic, educational, and interdisciplinary approach to patient care. She has previous experience as a Clinical Adjunct Professor at Northern Virginia Community College where she led and provided guidance to nursing students in a clinical setting. Whether working with nurses or her patients, Ms. Alekseyev is a passionate advocate of providing education concerning cardiovascular disease including risk factors, preventative care, and treatment and management. When it comes to venous disease patients, she is not only able to diagnose venous disease by performing comprehensive medical evaluations but can also treat it with in-office procedures such as sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablations.
Ms. Alekseyev is particularly interested in new advances in vein treatments such as VenaSeal and Varithena–two minimally invasive treatments that involve injecting veins with a medical compound to treat symptomatic venous disease–which she currently offers at her clinic.
Ms. Alekseyev received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing-Registered Nurse from James Madison University. She worked as a registered nurse for several years and then went on to obtain her Master of Science in Nursing from Georgetown University.
Ms. Alekseyev is fluent in Russian.
Philosophy of Care
“Growing up in a Russian family, I often accompanied my family members, especially my grandparents, to their appointments so that I could translate for them. Due to my firsthand experience as a translator and point person for my grandparents’ care, I am deeply understanding and empathetic to patients and their families whose native language may be different from my own. I want all my patients to know that I will work tirelessly to provide the clearest and easiest-to-understand information about their disease and treatment plan.
“When patients walk into my office, they are often confused and scared about their diagnosis. The first step I take is to review their background and histories so that I can help put all the pieces together for them. Medical care is complicated, and it is my goal to educate and guide my patients so that they leave my office feeling understood, well-informed, and confident about their plan.”
