About me
Dr. Potter is an experienced kidney and pancreas transplant surgeon and is board certified in urology. His areas of special expertise and interest include living and deceased donor kidney transplantation, laparoscopic living donor kidney surgery, pancreas transplantation, combined kidney and pancreas transplantation, surgical treatment of renal (kidney) cell cancer, kidney removal surgery for patients with end-stage renal disease, kidney transplant rejection and malfunction, pancreas transplant malfunction and rejection, and living kidney paired donation and chains. He also treats patients with urological problems, including mass lesions in native or transplanted kidneys and kidney recipients with strictures of the transplant ureter.
In addition to being an active researcher on issues in kidney and pancreas transplantation, Dr. Potter is involved in research and advocacy work to improve the organ allocation system, promote access and equity in transplantation, and advocate for transplant patients in the legislative and regulatory arenas. He has published numerous book chapters and articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Journal of Urology, Oncology, and American Journal of Transplantation.
Dr. Potter is active in the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN), where he is the Region 4 representative to the OPTN/UNOS Membership and Professional Standards Committee and has served on the UNOS Living Donor committee. He is also the current co-chair of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons Legislative and Regulatory Committee and will begin serving as chair in mid-2022.
He believes the privilege of caring for those with organ failure, and the donors who provide the gift of life for them, is the greatest in medicine and a duty he holds to be sacred. He is transparent and open in communication with his patients and wants them to know as much as possible and be completely engaged in their care. He strongly believes it is critical to listen to every patient and create a shared decision-making process, partnering with his patients in their care journey.
When Dr. Potter is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife, three children, and two hyperactive puppies. He loves hiking, biking, and exploring the Washington, DC area.
