About me

Suzanne M. Simkovich MD, MS, is a physician investigator in the Division of Healthcare Delivery Research at MedStar Health Research Institute and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Georgetown University. She practices as a pulmonary and critical care physician at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

Dr. Simkovich’s research focuses on evaluating and optimizing existing resources in a healthcare system to maximize the health, quality-of-life, and socioeconomic wellbeing of communities. She assesses the feasibility and the adaptability, including cost, of the existing healthcare systems and communities to uptake the novel interventions being investigated.

Dr. Simkovich has been engaged in studies both domestically and internationally in low resource settings including Zambia, Guatemala, India, Peru and Rwanda.

During her fellowship training at Johns Hopkins University, she was awarded a Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis alongside an ongoing trial, the Cardiopulmonary Outcomes in Household Air Pollution trial, which implemented a liquified petroleum gas stove and fuel distribution intervention in Puno, Peru. She is currently an investigator on the four country Household Air Pollution Intervention Network trial. As a faculty member, she is currently receiving advanced training in implementation science through the K12 Mentored Training in Implementation Science program at Washington University in St. Louis. She has recently been awarded tail funding to continue her work through the MedStar Academic Investment Fund. During her fellowship, she was awarded the Pearl Stetler Fellowship Award for women in Pulmonary medicine, the Lietman scholarship for Global Health, and the Workshop on Household Energy Impact Evaluation Scholarship through the Fogarty International Center for Implementation Science.

Dr. Simkovich has published multiple high impact publications in journals such as the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Lancet Respiratory Health, Environmental International and CHEST. A complete list of her published works is available on MyBibliography: My Bibliography - NCBI (nih.gov). She is an early career reviewer for the National Institutes of Health. She is serving as a guest editor for the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health.

Dr. Simkovich received her undergraduate degree in Financial Management and her master’s degree in Accounting from Clemson University. She received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina and her fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.
