MedStar Health Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship
Our mission
The MedStar Health Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a one-year program in which an APP fellow will engage in an interprofessional team at a large tertiary hospital serving a diverse critical care population. The program is a formalized pathway for new to practice APPs to be comprehensively trained in Critical Care. The APP Fellow will complete rotations through five specialty Critical Care areas, rotate through 2 electives, and gain exposure to the hospital-wide Sepsis Response Team.
Curriculum
Clinical
- Structured introduction to the specialty and service through a Critical Care Bootcamp
- Systematic Rotation through five Critical Care specialties with focus on the common pathologies seen in those areas: Surgery/Trauma ICU, Medical ICU, Neuroscience ICU, Cardiac Care Unit, Surgical Heart and Vascular ICU.
- Introduction and mastery of a comprehensive approach to the management of critically ill patients in an interdisciplinary team
- Deliberate progression of patient load and acuity throughout the program
- Supervision by a preceptor throughout the 12 months of clinical work
Educational
- Key learning objectives and reading for each clinical rotation
- Structured evaluation and feedback through meetings with program director at the conclusion of each rotation
- Simulation throughout the program to improve critical thinking, and allow evaluation and growth of real-time decision making
- Monthly didactic sessions
- Improvement of systems thinking through participation in hospital wide quality improvement initiative
