Our mission
The MedStar Health physician assistant Emergency Medicine Post-Graduate Training Program is a twelve-month onboarding and training program that offers service-line orientation and clinical education. It prepares our new to practice emergency medicine PAs to care for our complex patient population as well as the ability to work at the top of the PAs’ scope of practice.
Curriculum
Clinical
- 6-month period of close mentorship for all cases ensures our new physician assistants (PAs) are supported as they acclimate to gaining the confidence to care for patients more independently.
- Monthly chart review for the first 6 months to provide feedback on documentation skills.
- Mentorship by senior PAs and physicians.
Educational
- Self-paced EM Bootcamp lectures during credentialing period
- Monthly post-graduate learning sessions reviewing ECGs, high-risk diagnoses, and common acute presentations. Professional topics provide both service line specific orientation and career development information. In-person simulation lab and cadaver lab training prepare new grads for advanced procedures.
- Access to medical resident didactic sessions, weekly ultrasound section review, MEP education days, pop-up educational lectures, and special SIM sessions.

Kelly Schutz, PA-C, CAQ-EM
Director of Advanced Practice, Emergency MedicineKelly Schutz is the Director of Advanced Practice for MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP). She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 1996, then completed physician assistant school in 1998 at AACC (now University of Maryland at Baltimore).
Upon graduating, Kelly worked in family practice, but quickly transitioned to emergency medicine where she found her true passion. In 1999, Kelly joined the growing emergency medicine team at MedStar Good Samaritan Hospital (MGSH) in Baltimore where she continues to work. Throughout her emergency medicine career, Kelly has enjoyed honing her emergency medicine skills, has trained countless PA students, worked to improve patient care, and promoted the PA profession.
Kelly became the Lead PA for the MGSH emergency department in 2013. During this time, she completed the MEP LEAD program and served on the Medial Executive Committee (MEC) and Allied Health Credentialing Committee for the hospital. She has served on many operational, quality, and peer review emergency department committees. In 2018, Kelly served 6 months as the interim Lead PA for MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center’s emergency department. She led key recruiting efforts and served as a skills instructor for the MEP-wide post-graduate training program for PAs. In 2019, Kelly was the co-applicant for the AAPA’s Center for Healthcare Leadership and Management’s Employer of Excellence Award that MEP was awarded for 2019/2020.
In 2020, Kelly became MEP’s first Director of Advanced Practice and currently oversees 150 PAs throughout MEP’s nine emergency departments and two telehealth platforms. She is responsible for overall program vision and implementation, recruiting and staffing, professional practice policy, compliance standards, lectures at MEP wide events, and works clinically in all the emergency departments. Kelly currently sits on MEP’s Clinical Practice Council, MEP Peer Review Committee, MEP Quality and Safety subcommittee, and MEP Operations subcommittee. For the MedStar Health system, she is a member of the MedStar Medical Group (MMG) Governing Council and the APP Advisory Council where she chairs the Academic-Practice subcommittee involving APP student entry into MedStar Health.

Brooke Redmer, Ed.D, PA-C, CAQ-EM
Lead for MEP APP Education and TrainingBrooke Redmer is the Lead PA for APP Education & Training for MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP). Brooke graduated from Towson University with a Bachelor of Science in 2013. She immediately started Physician Assistant School after completing her undergraduate education at South College in Knoxville, TN, graduating in 2015 with a Master of Health Science in Physician Assistant Studies.
After completing PA School and two clinical rotations in Emergency Medicine throughout her training at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, Brooke quickly transitioned into a physician assistant role with MEP in early 2016. Brooke has continued her career with MEP over the last 8 years, working at several sites and mainly at MedStar Harbor Hospital.
In August 2021, Brooke was appointed as the Lead PA for the MedStar Acute Care Coordination Center (MAC3), where she works collaboratively with several sites ED sites across the MedStar system to bring telemedicine services in the form of teletriage, teleconsult with MedStar Health Urgent Care, and ETD (Evaluate, Treat, Discharge).
Brooke has had a long-standing passion for physician assistant education, mentoring multiple PA students throughout her career and participating as an educator at MEP post-graduate training events. Brooke’s passion led her down the path of obtaining her Doctorate in Education for the Health Professions from A.T. Still University in 2022. After completing her doctorate, Brooke joined Towson University’s Physician Assistant Studies Program faculty working closely with aspiring PAs throughout their educational endeavors. In April 2023, Brooke was appointed as the Lead for MEP APP Education & Training, overseeing the site educators, further developing the post-graduate training program, and creating new educational opportunities for seasoned MEP PAs.
Brooke completed the MEP LEAD Program in 2023. She serves on multiple committees including the MEP Emergency Medicine Clinical Practice Council, the MEP PA Advisory Council, the MEP Lead PA Council, and the MAC3 Peer Review Committee.
