Abstract submissions for the 2020 MedStar Health — Georgetown University research symposium and colloquium for educators in the health professions are now open!
All MedStar and Georgetown physicians, nurses, researchers, staff, residents, and fellows are encouraged to submit abstracts for the research symposium.
All faculty, staff, and trainees are encouraged to submit abstracts for the colloquium.
All abstracts must be submitted through the Abstract Submission Portal.
Please read carefully the submission instructions and detailed guidelines on the Abstract Submission Portal prior to submitting your abstract. Submissions close at 11:59 pm on Monday, February 3.
Healthcare & research team members/faculty abstract submission guidelines
Any of the following researchers should submit through this category: Research associates, investigators, faculty, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, or anyone else who is part of the healthcare/research team and is not part of GME.
General guidelines

All MedStar providers and researchers are encouraged to submit abstracts. For research conducted by a resident/fellow with a faculty investigator, the mentoring faculty member/attending must be present at the symposium if the abstract is selected for poster presentation.

If selected, you must attend the symposium to present your research or designate an alternate presenter.

No individual may be listed as the presenting author on more than TWO (2) abstract submissions.
-
Authors must certify that all research involving human subjects has been approved by an Institutional Review Board, and all studies involving the use of animals by an animal care committee.

Abstract submissions are limited to research at least partially conducted in the past 2 years (no earlier than April 2018).
-
It is the authors’ responsibility to submit abstracts free of typographical or other errors.
-
Abstracts reporting the results of Quality Improvement projects, Innovative Clinical Programs, and new teaching methodologies are all encouraged for submission to the symposium.

Abstracts submitted should include data or results. Abstracts without data/results will not be accepted for presentation.

Abstracts should be no longer than 2500 characters, which is approximately 400 words, and must be submitted in the following format:

Background and Objective: A clear statement of purpose and/or hypothesis must be included in this section

Methods and Analysis: A description of study design, all patient populations studied, materials and methods used, and quantitative analysis planned or performed
-
Results: A logical and concise summary of the study’s results
-
Conclusion: A discussion of the study’s relevance, application, and potential limitations is included here
-
Tables/Figures: Authors may include 1-2 tables/figures. Text in the tables/figures is not counted in the total word count. For optimum publishing quality, images/figures must be submitted as high-resolution JPEG files (600 dpi minimum). Tables up to 10 rows and 10 columns may be configured inside the submission system

Only selected abstracts will be presented as posters at the symposium. Poster selection will be determined by the Scientific Review committee. The committee will seek to achieve a balanced distribution of submissions for presentation at the symposium, based on scientific writing, research fields and participation from multiple MedStar Health sites/departments

Any member of the GME program should submit through this category (residents and fellows).
General guidelines

Abstract submissions can be either case reports or research projects. Case reports are purely descriptive and are eligible for the poster and case report competition. Original research projects are usually hypothesis-driven and are eligible for the manuscript competition.

If selected, you must attend the symposium to present your research or designate an alternate presenter.

No individual may be listed as presenting author on more than TWO (2) abstract submissions. Abstracts will be divided into PGY1-3, PGY4 and above, and Research resident/fellow categories.

Significance: How clinically relevant to the practicing clinician is the case report? How well is this conveyed? The case report should increase the understanding of a disease process, its diagnosis or its treatment.

Originality: How original are the concepts in this case report? Is a unique problem identified? Or, does the case report describe a novel approach to understanding an old problem?
-
Management of Patient Care & Clinical Reasoning: How logical are the ideas presented in this case report? How involved in and knowledgeable of the care of the patient is the author?

Organization and Conclusions: Overall, the case report is readable and accurately presented and conclusions are valid.

Oral presentations and awards
-
The Scientific Review Committee will determine the top abstract in each presenting author category (PGY1-3, PGY4 and above, Research Resident/Fellow) who will present their research. Each presenter will be allotted a maximum of 10 minutes for their oral presentation: 7-minute presentation and 3 minutes for questions and answers.

Awards will be presented during the main symposium.
-
Each top scorer will receive an award of $1500, second place will receive $500, third place will receive $250.

Any educator affiliated with Georgetown University or MedStar including, but not limited to, the following categories: faculty, residents, students, physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, and staff.

Oral presentations are designed to report on one curricular and/or educational research project. Oral presentations are 10 minutes in duration with 5 minutes for discussion. Oral presentations will be conducted in the morning during the Colloquium. Oral abstracts will be 400 words or less in length. (See below for details on abstract text requirements).

Poster presentations are designed to report on one curricular and/or educational research project. Accepted posters will be displayed from 1pm – 6pm so posters can be viewed prior to and during the poster session. Poster abstracts will be 400 words or less in length. Abstract for CENTILE colloquium symposium:
General information
Symposia sessions address a theme of topical interest and debate in medical and health professions education. The form usually consists of a series of up to four short presentations which provide different views and perspectives in order to stimulate discussion and debate with the audience. Symposia are 60 minutes’ duration, of which a maximum of 30 minutes should be taken up with introductory presentations, and the remainder of the session devoted to discussion and audience participation. Accepted symposia will be conducted during the morning of the Colloquium. Symposia abstracts will be 400 words or less in length (See below for details on abstract text requirements).

Symposium presentation abstract instructions
Abstracts should be no longer than 2500 characters, which is approximately 400 words, and must be submitted in the following format:
Title: Title should NOT exceed 150 characters in length and should be in Title Case.
Summary: Describe symposia topic and why it is relevant to health professions education.
Presenters: List the name, affiliation, and topic to be presented by each individual symposium presenter. Include a sentence addressing the presenter’s expertise.
Review process
Only selected abstracts will be presented at the Colloquium. Selection will be determined by the CENTILE Program Committee. The Committee will seek to achieve a balanced distribution of submissions for presentation at the Colloquium, based on innovation, contribution, relevance, writing, and educational field.
Abstracts will be scored according to the following criteria:
