Jeffrey Shupp

Jeffrey Shupp, MD, FACS, directs the Burn Research program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and MedStar Health Research Institute. He is an Associate Professor of Surgery, Biochemistry and Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Dr. Shupp's research interests include: surgical infections, wound healing, biophotonics, burn pathophysiology, host response to injury, and abnormal wound healing such as hypertrophic scar. His research has resulted in over 90 peer-reviewed publications. Dr. Shupp helped to develop and design a nationally recognized research program at MedStar Washington Hospital Center that encompasses all aspects of burn research (multi-center clinical trials, pre-clinical, translational, and basic science research). Dr. Shupp's research is funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD), and many corporate and foundation sponsors. Additionally, his laboratory receives generous funding and support from non-profit and corporate sponsors.

Dr. Shupp obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia; he has studied Molecular Biology at both the University of Maryland and Georgetown University. Additionally, he completed a training fellowship in Molecular Pathology at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Dr. Shupp joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center (MWHC) for surgical residency training and completed a fellowship in Burn Surgery. He is currently an attending surgeon in the Division of Trauma and Burn at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and Director of the Burn Center.
