William S. Krimsky, MD, is an interventional pulmonologist at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. He also is medical director of clinical research at Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates of Baltimore. Dr. Krimsky specializes in robotic surgery and innovative treatments for lung cancer.
Dr. Krimsky is an expert in interventional pulmonology and in the use of electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy for the diagnosis and treatment of lung disease. He has developed innovative techniques to treat diseases of the chest, and he travels nationally and internationally to teach these techniques.
Dr. Krimsky is lead investigator for a number of national clinical trials. He has received several awards for his work, including recognition by the New England Respiratory Research Competition and Awards Program for Excellence in Research in Respiratory Medicine. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease, and critical care medicine, and he has specialty certification in interventional pulmonology. The results of his research have been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology, Chest, and Annals of Thoracic Surgery.
Dr. Krimsky is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians. He is an active member of several professional societies, including the American College of Chest Physicians, the Society of Critical Care Medicine, and the American Thoracic Society. During his career, he has been invited to speak at more than 50 gatherings of these and other medical groups. In addition to his work in the United States, Dr. Krimsky has traveled to China to teach navigational bronchoscopy to physicians there.
His medical degree is from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He completed an internship at Mercy Hospital and a residency at Johns Hopkins University/Sinai Hospital. He then completed a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, Lebanon, NH, and he was a visiting fellow in interventional pulmonology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia.

Selected Research
Lung volume reduction coil for treatment of patients with emphysema (RENEW)
Emphysema damages lung tissue, causing shortness of breath and leading to reduced capacity for activities of daily life. Dr. Krimsky is a principal investigator on this multicenter, randomized, controlled study sponsored by PneumRx, Inc. This trial is designed to evaluate use of a lung volume reduction coil as a new, minimally invasive treatment for emphysema. In this treatment, the coil is implanted in the airways of the lung through a fiber-optic bronchoscope. This treatment works by compressing the diseased lung tissue, creating more room for healthier areas of the lung to expand and function, making it easier for patients to breathe. This study will measure change in the 6-minute walk test.
The changing anatomic position of squamous cell carcinoma of the lung
In this retrospective review, Dr. Krimsky and colleagues found a substantive shift in the traditional distribution of squamous cell carcinoma, with the majority of these cancers being diagnosed in the lung periphery as opposed to more central locations.
