Demetrie Garner is the project manager of the colorectal cancer screening project at MedStar Health Research Institute (MHRI). His research portfolio focuses on equitable screening for colorectal cancer and hepatitis C.
Previously, as the Regional Patient Navigator for MHRI, he provided equitable coordination to high-risk patients with Hepatitis C and a high risk with reinfection and those with a history of substance use disorder. Demetrie Garner is a dedicated professional with a focus on substance use disorders and public health. His work—academically, professionally, and through volunteer activities—has been centered on addressing substance use disorders. His efforts have spanned training other professionals in prevention, addressing barriers to treatment, and developing educational content.
Demetrie introduced the Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) model to the District of Columbia Department of Health, playing a crucial role in the system-wide implementation of this program. He also collaborated with the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) to advise on digital pamphlets aimed at preventing and educating about the stigma associated with substance use disorders. Additionally, he has conducted multiple training webinars on substance use and worked with the PTTC to develop content for prevention webinars. His contributions have been instrumental in advancing the understanding and treatment of substance use disorders. Currently, he is pursuing a Master's degree in Health Public Policy at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).
