What is it? What does it do?
Most pediatric fractures are treated with casts due to a child’s ability to heal rapidly. Unfortunately, the process for cast removal can be a scary and traumatic experience for a child because of the intimidating appearance of a traditional circular cast saw’s exposed metal blade. This can pose a challenge for the patient caregiver and operator and can lead to an uncomfortable experience for most children.
The Cartoon Cast Saw Cover (CCSC) design presents a friendly appearance, such as a cartoon animal covering the circular saw and teeth. The CCSC protective cover aligns with the teeth of the blade obscuring the child’s view during the cast removal process.
Why is it better?
-
Helps ease the anticipated fear of pediatric patients by concealing the blade
-
Saves time and reduces the likelihood of patient injury
-
Creates a fun, game-like experience for the cast removal process
What is its current status?
The MedStar Inventor Services team has pursued a patent for the Cartoon Cast Saw Cover, which is currently pending. We have developed several prototypes of the CCSC from CAD designs using 3D printing.
The MedStar Inventor Services team is now seeking a licensing/collaboration partner to develop and commercialize this technology. Please contact us at invent@medstar.net.
