Welcome to physical medicine and rehabilitation at Bethesda
Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians aim to enhance and restore functional ability to those with physical impairments or disabilities affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, and tendons. The goals of our PM&R doctors, sometimes called “physiatrists,” are to maximize patients’ independence in activities of daily living and improve quality of life. PM&R is a specialized, non-surgical branch of medicine that addresses problems that touch upon all major systems in the body, using aggressive rehabilitation to promote the restoration of maximum function to people with problems ranging from simple physical mobility to complex cognitive functions.
