Kimberly Schwenk, MSN, RN, serves as Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) at MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center. She is responsible for meeting the vision, mission, safety, quality, and strategic goals of the Department of Nursing for MedStar Health. Kim has direct oversight of the operational and financial activities of the nursing department and oversees a nursing team of over 1,000 team members.
As the CNO of MedStar Franklin Square, she led the charge on MedStar Franklin Square being re-designated as Magnet® for the fourth time by the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Magnet® recognition is the highest honor that a healthcare organization can earn for nursing excellence. MedStar Franklin Square is the only nursing team in Maryland to hold this prestigious honor of achieving a fourth designation. Over the past several years, Kim has focused on onboarding new-to-practice and experienced nurses to increase the number of individuals who provide direct care to our patients. Kim is also dedicated to the education and certification of our team members to enhance specialized knowledge and clinical competence. Kim’s innovative tactics and collaborative working environment have brought together nurses, physicians, interdisciplinary leaders, and the medical administration to ensure we are meeting the needs of our patients. Kim prides herself on the relationships and partnerships developed during her tenure to drive the highest quality and safety provided to the patients we serve.
Kim joined MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center in 2021 as the Assistant Vice President of Nursing Operations and Patient Care Services. She had 24-hour administrative and leadership responsibilities for a broad scope of programs. Kim also helped oversee the operational and financial activities of the nursing department. She collaborated with clinical and administrative leaders to nurture a supportive and participative learning environment centered around collaborative governance and shared decision-making. With over 35 years of experience--from a bedside clinician to a nurse educator to her many leadership roles--Kim holds a well-rounded knowledge base to understand the emotional and physical needs of clinical care, for both patients and the nursing staff. Kim is a nurses’ nurse and is proud of the exceptional and compassionate care delivered at MedStar Franklin Square. Kim graduated with a Master of Science in Nursing and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Phoenix.
