Magnet Nursing Status
MedStar Georgetown was the first hospital in the nation's capital to achieve Magnet® Recognition, a prestigious status granted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center for demonstrating excellence in nursing care, innovative professional nursing practice, and nursing satisfaction. We were successfully re-designated in 2008, 2013, 2018, and 2023. We are proud to be part of an elite community of only 1% of hospitals to have received this designation five or more times.
National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center
The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington, D.C., area. NCI recognizes centers with this distinction that meet rigorous standards and excel in laboratory science, clinical research and population-based programs, along with robust translational research that bridges these areas. It also demonstrates expansive public education and outreach capabilities which focus on the community. Award received since 1974.
MedStar Georgetown Named One of the Best Maternity Care Hospitals in the U.S.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has been named one of the Best Maternity Hospitals in 2022 by Newsweek magazine and Statista Inc., a world-leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. MedStar Georgetown is among an elite group of hospitals from across the country and the only hospital in the District of Columbia to meet this standard of excellence and earn this recognition. This is the third time in recent years that MedStar Georgetown has been recognized with this distinction.

MedStar Georgetown receives stroke care award and recognition from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association
MedStar Georgetown is proud to announce it has received the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke GOLD PLUS with Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite Plus. MedStar Georgetown has received this recognition for the last several years and this year, the hospital attained new recognition – the Advanced Therapy and Target: Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Achievement Award.
This recognition is presented by the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to recognize the hospital for its continued success in using the Get With The Guidelines program and applying evidenced-based treatment guidelines to improve patient care and outcomes.
Apex Recognition for Commitment to Excellence in Respiratory Care by American Association for Respiratory Care
The Respiratory Care Department at MedStar Georgetown has received the American Association for Respiratory Care Apex Recognition Award. This award is given to programs that are committed to excellence in professional development and the education of respiratory therapists to deliver the highest quality of care and elevate recognition of the respiratory therapy profession.
First Patient Blood Management Certification
MedStar Georgetown the first hospital in the United States to receive a prestigious recognition of excellence in patient blood management by The Joint Commission and AABB.
The certification provides a third-party review and evaluation of patient blood management, based on AABB Standards for a Patient Blood Management Program. AABB is an international association of professionals working in transfusion and cellular therapies. This certification is an evidence-based approach to providing the best care to patients who might need transfusions.
Award received in 2017.
PRISM Award
The Premier Recognition in the Specialty of Med-Surg (PRISM) Award provides special recognition to the medical-surgical units that consistently demonstrate exceptional nursing practice, effective leadership, a healthy practice environment, and evidence-based, positive clinical outcomes. It is co-sponsored by the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) and the Medical-Surgical Nursing Certification Board (MSNCB).
Our C6-2 inpatient medical/surgical unit is the first unit in the District of Columbia to receive this prestigious honor.
Beacon Award
Five units at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital have been recognized with the Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) to include the Thoracic Intermediate Care Unit (IMC), the Medical Intensive Care Unit, Surgical Intensive Care Unit, and two other IMCs. These units have been recognized for showcasing exceptional patient care and a healthy work environment. Beacon awardees set the standard for excellence in patient care environments by collecting and using evidence-based information to improve patient outcomes and patient and staff satisfaction.MedStar Georgetown Awarded FACT Accreditation
Our Stem Cell Transplant and Cellular Immunotherapy Program , home to the nation’s largest stem cell collection facility, is the only full-service, adult Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT)-accredited program in the Washington, D.C., region for allogeneic transplantation, autologous transplantation, and cellular immunotherapy. The National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC)-accredited breast centers are dedicated to improving the quality of care and monitoring for patients with diseases of the breast and provide patients with a comprehensive, team approach to care, state-of-the-art services and treatments, information about clinical trials, and access to prevention and early detection program, cancer education, and support services.
Breast Imaging Center of Excellence
Our Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center earned the American College of Radiology (ACR) designation as a Breast Imaging Center of Excellence.

When you see the gold seal of accreditation, you can rest assured that our facility will meet the highest level of patient safety standards and image quality.
Why? Because it means that our facility and personnel have gone through a comprehensive review to earn accreditation status by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Among patients and physicians alike, ACR accreditation is recognized as the gold standard in medical imaging.
Designated as a "Baby-Friendly" Hospital by Baby Friendly USA
MedStar Georgetown was the first hospital in the D.C. Metro area to receive this coveted award. Hospitals that receive this prestigious international award have undergone a rigorous on-site survey and demonstrate that they have correctly integrated the “Ten Steps To Successful Breastfeeding” into their practice. Award received in February 2012.
