Proton Therapy at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

Dr. Nitika Paudel talks with a fellow healthcare colleage at MedStar Health. At MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, we’re proud to be the first and most experienced proton therapy facility in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area. As the first site in the world to offer the most advanced form of proton beam therapy with HYPERSCANTM, we greatly enhance cancer care and convenience for patients of all ages throughout the region.

Proton therapy with HYPERSCAN uses pencil beam scanning to deliver radiation that matches a tumor’s exact shape and size. With greater precision and virtually no exit dose, it involves significantly less radiation exposure to normal tissues. As a result, this approach can lower the risk of side effects and secondary, radiation-induced cancers.

Proton therapy can treat benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tumors anywhere in the body. It is especially beneficial for patients who:

  • Have tumors near critical organs in the body, like the brain, heart, or lungs
  • Have recurrent cancer and have had radiation in the past
  • Are pediatric patients who may benefit from reduced risks of developing secondary cancers caused by radiation

As the most experienced proton therapy team in the Washington, D.C. region, our radiation oncologists are experts in evaluating each patient’s unique case. Working alongside other cancer experts, your multidisciplinary team will determine the best care plan tailored to you, considering factors such as your cancer type, the tumor’s location, size, and stage, as well as your overall health, and preferences. Most importantly, we’re here to guide you through each step of your treatment, providing personalized care and support throughout your recovery.

Patients may also qualify for proton therapy clinical trials through Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center—our research engine and the only comprehensive cancer center in the Washington D.C., region designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).

Contact us today for an initial consultation or a second opinion appointment to discuss the safest and most effective cancer treatment options for you.
