Welcome to sports performance at Cockeysville

An athlete works out in a MedStar Health sports performance training gym.We offer sports performance services for athletes seeking to improve their athletic ability. Comprehensive strength and conditioning programs are available to help athletes improve speed, agility, power, strength, flexibility, and coordination. Whether you are ready to get back in the game after a prior injury or want to take your skills to the next level, we have a program for you.

MedStar Sports Medicine coaches are certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. Fitness programs for adult athletes or individuals looking to improve their overall health are also available.

  • Jay Dyer, CSCS

    Jay Dyer

    Jay Dyer is a certified strength and conditioning specialist and director of sports performance for MedStar Health. Jay serves as the Strength and Conditioning Coach for the U.S. National Team, as well as John Hopkin’s lacrosse teams. Outside of the sport of lacrosse, Jay has trained Division I and Division III athletes in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, and field hockey. Athletes from the National Football League, National Basketball Association, and Major League Baseball have utilized his program to improve performance.

  • Alex Milton, M.Ed., CSCS, ELDOA 1&2, FRCms, PES

    Alex MiltonAlex is a certified strength and conditioning specialist for MedStar Health. He specializes in rehab performance and oversees the return-to-play program. Alex works closely with physical therapists to train athletes who are coming back from injuries. He works with a wide range of sports and ages, from middle school athletes to professional level players in the NFL and NBA. Outside of this program, he trains high school teams and college athletes, providing education to properly sprint and lift effectively for their respective sports.

    Before coming to MedStar Health, Alex worked at eight different Division I universities, including University of North Carolina, Wake Forest University, and University of Kentucky. He oversaw their training protocols and GPS systems, where he tracked and monitored player data and metrics. This provides an elevated insight into the teams’ adaption to training and stress tolerance.

    In his free time, Alex enjoys traveling and scuba diving and has a passion for photography.

  • Clare Ingersoll, MS, CSCS

    Clare IngersollClare formerly coached at Virginia Tech, Coppin State University, and Washington College. She completed her Master's degree in Exercise and Sport Studies at Smith College, where she was a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach. Over the course of her career, she has worked with a wide range of athletes, including lacrosse, basketball, field hockey, volleyball, swimming and diving, tennis, wrestling, baseball, and softball. While at Washington College, she majored in Psychology and played field hockey.

  • Dave Vargo, CSCS

    Dave VargoDave earned his bachelor's degree in sport management from California University of Pennsylvania. He is a certified strength and conditioning specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), as well as a Certified Level 1 Coach through Precision Nutrition.

    In his 10 years in the industry, Dave has worked with a wide range of clientele from high school athlete to senior populations. Prior to joining MedStar in 2021, Dave was the head trainer of a personal training studio where he created and oversaw programming for more than 130 clients.

  • Mitchell Zajicek, CSCS

    Mitch ZajicekMitchell is from Pittsburgh, PA. He studied exercise science at Grove City College in Pennsylvania, where he also played football for the Wolverines and was an assistant strength coach. Before coming to MedStar Health, Mitchell served as Graduate Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Cumberland University, Head Strength Coach at Widener University, Assistant Strength Coach at Utah Tech University, and Head Strength Coach at Indiana University of PA (IUP). Most recently, Mitchell was the strength coach for the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division in Kentucky.

    In his free time, Mitchell enjoys cooking and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, a martial art which focuses grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.

  • Jay has been a prominent name in the Lacrosse world for many, many years. We’re happy to host him on our podcast to gain the perspective from a strength and conditioning coach on how to best train lacrosse athletes, and truly any athlete, which we dive into in the episode. 

    Jay shares his insight on the importance of relationship building, and tools he uses to build relationships with athletes to help them in the weight room and ultimately translates that into being a strong athlete on the field and in life.

    Alex briefly touches on social media and the problems that may arise from this medium when it comes to forming optimal movement patterns in athletes and maintaining safety.
