Overview
Physical therapists play an integral part in the health and well-being of our communities. From preventive care, to rehabilitation, to the treatment and management of illnesses and injuries, physical therapists enhance the quality of life in those they touch.
The healthcare industry is currently experiencing a significant, nation-wide shortage of physical therapists. This negatively affects our communities and their access to timely care. MedStar Health is committed to alleviating this crisis through a new, innovative partnership with one of the regions premier graduate schools, Marymount University.
Together, we aim to draw more physical therapy students to the region with an expanded Doctor of Physical Therapy program and a $100,000 scholarship fund. Physical therapy students will have increased opportunities to learn side-by-side from MedStar Health’s physical therapists and other healthcare specialists who are currently working in their field. This will result in an incredibly prepared workforce that will also have access to high-paying job opportunities with MedStar Health upon graduation.
Volunteer opportunities
DPT students at Marymount University will have numerous opportunities to volunteer and apply their classroom learning with MedStar Health. We have more than 100 sports and running partnerships ranging in all levels of athletes. Some events and opportunities may include:

Classroom enhancements
MedStar Health is the region’s largest healthcare system with 10 hospitals, 300 outpatient care centers (including 50+ outpatient physical therapy centers), and 4,000 physicians. DPT students at Marymount will have access to learn from leading clinicians in their field. MedStar Health will provide multidisciplinary guest speakers in the classroom, tutorial groups, and various labs. Specialties include:

Environment of learning
MedStar Health has a robust career development model (“Environment of Learning”) for outpatient therapists and therapist assistants. We are passionate about providing our team members with endless continuing education, mentorship, and leadership. Our partnership allows Marymount students access to our extensive programs, classes, and events. Examples include:

Invitations to attend MedStar Health’s “Dinner with the Doctor” live and virtual events. Listen and ask questions of experts in the field of medicine.

Shadowing opportunities including on the athletic field and in the operating room, clinic, or locker room.

Monthly journal clubs and specialty “POD” meetings, including sports, orthopedic, neurology, etc.

Scholarship information
MedStar Health is committed to providing care to our communities both now and in the future. The ongoing national shortage of physical therapists deeply affects our patients and their access to care. We are pleased to provide Marymount University with five $20,000 scholarships to be awarded to students enrolling in the DPT program in the Fall of 2024.
