OLNEY, Md. — MedStar Health has proudly broken ground on the John D. Maylath, MD, Oncology Pavilion at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center. Dr. Maylath served the Olney community in various roles with MedStar Montgomery Medical Center in a career that spanned nearly 40 years. Dr. Maylath practiced urology from 1965 to 1998, before serving as the hospital’s first vice president of Medical Affairs from 1998 to 2003. Dr. Maylath was influential in launching oncology services for patients at MedStar Montgomery Medical Center.

“We are presented with a unique and meaningful way to honor the legacy of Dr. John Maylath through naming the Oncology Pavilion,” said Emily Briton, president of MedStar Montgomery Medical Center, and senior vice president, MedStar Health. “Today we proudly celebrate what he means to our community, and the impact this center will have on our oncology services.”

Marian Maylath, Dr. Maylath’s daughter, generously pledged a seven-figure gift for MedStar Montgomery. Her gift represents one of the largest commitments in the hospital’s history and will serve to further support the community’s oncology needs.

This remarkable philanthropic investment stands as one lead gift among others, including a generous bequest from Robert “Bobby” Smith and support from corporate partner Sandy Spring Bank. Remarkably, the entirety of the project has been funded through philanthropy, highlighting the community's dedication to advancing healthcare services.

“Marian’s generosity ensures that the spirit of Dr. Maylath lives on every day, and we sincerely thank her and her family.” said Jennifer Smith, vice president of Philanthropy at MedStar Montgomery.

A proud father to his three daughters, Marian Maylath, Barbara Heckett, and Jackie Barnhart, Dr. Maylath lived in Olney with his wife Elaine, until his death in 2014.
