The Adaptive Sports and Fitness Program at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital is a stellar example of how philanthropic partnerships can make meaningful differences for individuals with physical disabilities, helping them live healthier, happier, and more independent lives.
Our fully philanthropic dependent Adaptive Sports and Fitness Program empowers individuals with disabilities to pursue healthy and active lifestyles through recreational and competitive sports. Our programs are open to anyone in the community with a physical disability, at no cost to the individual. The adaptive sports program provides opportunities and resources for sports and recreation to athletes with disabilities and their families. These programs are made available at venues where participants can build self-confidence, form lasting personal relationships, improve health and wellbeing, gain greater independence, and of course, have fun.
We provide coaching, training, equipment, and travel assistance in nine sports, while hosting competitive and recreational adaptive sports tournaments and special events throughout the year. Our coaching staff, personal trainers, and volunteers are highly qualified and well trained, and we offer circuit training, open gym, and cardio fitness classes both at the hospital and in the community. The following sports programs are fully funded by generous philanthropic support:
- Wheelchair Rugby
- Wheelchair Basketball
- Bocce
- Fitness Programs
- Cycling
- Tennis
- Sled Hockey
- SuperH® 5k Run, Walk, and Wheel
