The Adding Life to Years® campaign at MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital will elevate patient care in the nation’s capital to new levels. Philanthropic partnerships supporting renovations provide an environment for state-of-the-art comprehensive inpatient and outpatient clinical care services for patients with stroke and other brain injuries. This vision also allows space for an expanded neurosciences research program—which is one of the fastest-growing areas of medicine.
Every detail of the Adding Life to Years® campaign at MedStar NRH is patient-centered. This ensures the highest level of patient engagement in the rehabilitation process while being built in the most impactful and comfortable manner.
To better meet the needs of patients, the redesign improves space utilization to enhance and expand existing capacity. The renovated patient care area will include a 32-bed care unit with all private patient rooms designed for comfort. It will include dedicated family support spaces, as well as areas for physical and occupational therapy, speech-language pathology, and neuropsychology services to promote each patient’s optimal recovery. The patient care area will harness the most advanced hospital design elements to promote healing, safety, and comfort.
To begin our first phase of renovations, we have recently completed and replaced all five elevators which provide faster, safer, and more reliable floor access. We have also completed, redesigned, and constructed a new entrance canopy and ADA-compliant walkway for increased accessibility and an inviting new façade. We are looking forward to transitioning into phase two of our Adding Life to Years Campaign with construction and redesign in spring 2023.
Experienced hospital architects have designed a brilliant, top-down renovation that leverages existing space, amplifies natural light, and optimizes the function of every square foot. The layout is flexible and modular to allow for growth and adaptation to our work patterns and our patient population.

Leading-edge research
The Center’s research will build on MedStar National Rehabilitation Hospital's existing neuroscience research program, which is among the nation’s most important. Our strong inpatient neurological rehabilitation programs and unique multisite outpatient network provide the large population base needed to support clinical research, which can quickly translate into improved interventions for patients.
Our robust portfolio of current research includes everything from prevention of secondary stroke, to the development of improved assistive technology to increase patients’ day-to-day function.
Additionally, Georgetown University and MedStar NRH have joined forces to create a new Center for the Study of Brain Plasticity and Recovery (CBPR) which aims to expand our strengths in research and patient care as well as improve the lives of patients by restoring brain function.
