Musculoskeletal Research and Innovation Center
Located on the sixth floor of the South Building at MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, the Musculoskeletal Research and Innovation Center is a 12,000-square-foot space dedicated to teaching and research using the latest in advanced technology.
The center bundles the two existing musculoskeletal biomechanics labs and adds several more key components: the Innovation in Motion Lab (iMoLab), led by senior scientist Dario Martelli, PhD; the Surgical Technique and Training (STAT) Laboratory: Navigation and Robotics; and a 3D Printing Laboratory and Office Suite. These elements converge within a highly collaborative, ultra-modern center. The project is being completed in three phases, with Phase III commencing in 2025.
The creation of the STAT Laboratory: Navigation and Robotics is critical for training the next generation of orthopaedic specialists, while also playing an important role in the development of innovative new technology. The newly renovated space will be fully equipped with the latest technological advancements in robotics and virtual laboratory training.
Gait and motion analysis systems are indispensable tools for understanding movement-related challenges, providing vital data that can guide healthcare providers as they recommend tailored treatments to promote independence for patients. The lab will drive progress in rehabilitation, performance optimization, and injury prevention, enhancing the quality of life for our patients.
Using sophisticated techniques and equipment, clinicians in the iMoLab measure human movement patterns, providing invaluable insights into conditions ranging from sports injuries to neurological disorders. Among its many advancements, the iMoLab features a Grail System treadmill to analyze levels of function and the body's response to changes.
Work continues to make the center a powerful resource for our patients. For more information, please contact Jonathan Rodak, director of development, MedStar Union Memorial Hospital, at 410-554-2444 or jonathan.rodak@medstar.net.
