Hilary Poan MS, BSN, RN
Hilary Poan, MS, BSN, RN is the vice president and chief nursing information officer for MedStar Health. She is responsible for strategic and operational nursing leadership in the development, deployment, re-engineering, optimization, and integration of clinical information systems to support clinicians and patient care. She works in close partnership with the MedStar Health chief nursing officer and chief medical information officer to ensure clinical multidisciplinary leadership of all clinical IT projects.
After first working as a registered nurse at UCLA Medical Center, Poan began her career at MedStar Health in 2006. After opening a pediatric transplant unit as the nurse educator at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, Poan transitioned into a clinical informatics role there, where she spent three years helping develop the nursing informatics department and designing, implementing, training, and optimizing the Cerner electronic health record (EHR) system for inpatient nursing.
Her extensive collaboration optimizing MedStar Health’s EHR with multidisciplinary teams, administrators, and leadership led to her appointment as MedStar Health’s clinical project manager for EHR clinical transformation, a position she held for six years. She then became the system clinical director of nursing informatics before being promoted to vice president and chief nursing information officer for MedStar Health. In these roles, she has had a pivotal impact on growing the nursing informatics department and is responsible for developing a new nursing analytics program.
Poan is a graduate of the MedStar Health Nurse Leader Development program and the Wharton Executive Education Program for nurse leaders. She holds a BA in theology and pre-medical studies from the University of Notre Dame, a BSN in nursing from Johns Hopkins University and a Master of Science in health informatics from the University of Illinois Chicago.
