Hip revision surgery removes old hip implants that are causing discomfort and replaces them with a new artificial joint. What does total hip revision surgery involve?
Surgery requires our experienced orthopedic surgeons to reconstruct your hip after it shows signs of wearing, causes pain, becomes infected, or has another issue. Sometimes called a total hip arthroplasty revision, the procedure often uses a bone graft from the patient’s own body. During the procedure, any loose, damaged, or infected portions of the original artificial hip replacement are removed and replaced with a new, sturdy hip joint.
Hip replacement infections
If a joint replacement becomes infected, the health of the joint and limb — and your overall health — become an immediate concern. Not all orthopedic specialists are trained to manage and treat infected total joints. At MedStar Health, our surgeons appropriately manage and aggressively treat infections. This often requires removal of the total joint implant and a course of antibiotics, followed by revision hip replacement. This approach is critical for removing the bacteria from your system and maximizing your overall health and outcome.
What does total hip revision surgery recovery involve?
During recovery, your physician will work with you to develop a recovery and rehabilitation plan that is personalized to your needs. The plan will begin during your hospital stay and will continue until you are entirely healed. Usually, physical therapy and strength exercises are used in conjunction with education about your new hip and prescription pain medication, when needed. The full recovery process will take time, similar to your original hip replacement procedure. This requires your participation for a full and successful recovery.
In addition, MedStar Health will assign you a Patient Care Coordinator (PaCC), who will support you throughout your recovery. Your PaCC will:
