UroLift® System | Procedures | MedStar Health

MedStar Health was one of the first healthcare systems in Northern Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Maryland to offer the cutting-edge, FDA-approved Urolift® System for treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). With one of the most experienced teams in the region performing this new procedure, our team offers excellent outcomes for men suffering from BPH.

BPH is a common, non-cancerous condition in which men experience swelling of the prostate as they age. When the prostate grows, it can put pressure on the urethra. This can cause issues with urination, interfere with the ability to get a restful night’s sleep, and increase the risk for urinary tract infections. If left untreated, BPH can cause damage to the bladder.

The UroLift® system is a proven treatment for BPH with superior patient outcomes compared to traditional medical and surgical BPH treatment.

What is UroLift®?

UroLift® is a quick, outpatient procedure in which four to six small implants are inserted through the urethra in order to reposition enlarged prostate tissue. By alleviating pressure on the urethra, UroLift® can relieve BPH symptoms for up to five years.

Unique advantages of UroLift®

Compared to traditional BPH treatments, some of the most significant advantages to UroLift® are:

  • Procedure is completed in just one office visit and takes as little as five minutes to perform
  • Requires only local anesthesia
  • Provides fast relief of symptoms—usually within two weeks
  • Causes minimal sexual side effects

UroLift® requires no incisions or heating of the prostate. It can often reduce or eliminate the need for BPH medications and requires minimal downtime after treatment. Most patients experience only minimal post-procedure pain or bleeding. There is typically no need for a catheter, an overnight hospital stay, special follow-up, or medical management in the post-procedure period.

Candidates for UroLift®

Men with a prostate size between 20 and 80cc may be candidates for UroLift® This treatment option can be particularly helpful for men on blood thinner medications, who may not be candidates for some other available BPH treatments.

Men who have a prostate volume of over 80 cc, or who have allergies to nickel, titanium, or stainless steel, may be better candidates for other minimally-invasive BPH treatments. MedStar Health offers a range of BPH treatment options, including Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP), Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), Rezum (Transurethral water vapor therapy), and GreenLight™ Laser Photoselective Vaporization of the Prostate (PVP).

Curious if UroLift® or another BPH treatment may work for you? The best first step is to talk with your MedStar Health urologist. Your doctor will consider your overall health picture, explain your options, and find the treatment plan that is best for you.
