The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Interventional Radiology-Independent Fellowship Program

MedStar Health - Georgetown University PartnershipThe Interventional Radiology-Independent Fellowship at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and Washington Hospital Center provides the unique opportunity for fellows to develop clinical skills and research interests under the tutelage of a large, experienced faculty in the preeminent hospitals in the Washington, D.C. area. The fellowship program successfully prepares the trainee for a leading role as an academic or private practice interventional radiologist.

Program Objective

The objectives are to provide trainees with a comprehensive, closely supervised educational experience in vascular/interventional radiology, emphasizing the performance of vascular and nonvascular diagnostic and interventional procedures and integration of the procedure into clinical patient care.

Conference Schedule:

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital

  • Interventional Radiology Didactic Lecture (weekly)

  • Interventional Case Presentation (weekly)

  • Morbidity and Mortality Conference (monthly)

  • Multi-disciplinary vascular conference (weekly)

  • Journal Club (monthly)

MedStar Washington Hospital Center

  • Interventional Radiology Didactic Lecture (weekly)
  • Center for Vascular Care Conference (weekly)

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital:

 Clinical Service  24 weeks
 Fluoro-guided vascular/nonvascular diagnosis and interventions  3.5 days/week

 CT guided interventions 

 3 hours/week
 Interventional Clinic  0.5 days/week
 Research  0.5 days/week

MedStar Washington Hospital Center:

Clinical Service  21 weeks
 Fluoro-guided vascular/nonvascular diagnosis and interventions  16 weeks
 Neurovascular interventions  1 week

 CT guided interventions

 1 week (or equivalent)
 Consult Service  1 week
 Center for Vascular Care  2 weeks (or equivalent)
 Noninvasive Vascular Imaging   2 weeks

Application information

Selection Process:

This program participates in the National Resident Matching Program. We only accept applications via ERAS.

Selected candidates will be invited for tours and interviews with faculty. Interviews typically last for half a day, commencing at either 9 AM or 12 PM.

Program Requirements:

A candidate for the MedStar Georgetown University Hospital Interventional Radiology - Independent Fellowship Program must show:

  • Completion of a radiology residency in an accredited United States Training program
  • Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Radiology
  • Foreign graduates need to have completed a radiology residency and are required to hold an ECFMG certification (step 1, 2 and 3, plus language test). Please note, that MedStar Georgetown University Hospital only sponsors J1 visas.

Fellowship Positions:

Up to three fellowship positions are available each year.
