Today, maternal mental health conditions are the most common complication of pregnancy and childbirth, with as many as one in five women experiencing a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder. Welcoming a new baby into the world can be a joyous experience for many; it is also a time of challenge and struggle for mothers and their families. Despite increasing awareness, about 75% of women who experience these disorders— during pregnancy or after—do not get the help they need.
What is the MedStar Health Mother-Baby Intensive Outpatient Program?
The Mother-Baby Intensive Outpatient Program at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital is a first-of-its-kind program in the Washington region. The Mother-Baby Program is an intensive outpatient program for pregnant and postpartum individuals with mood and anxiety disorders. This pioneering initiative redefines care by nurturing the mother-baby relationship while providing comprehensive support. You'll find tailored treatment plans, including individual and group therapies, psychiatry services, and holistic wellness support. Start your journey to feeling better with your baby by your side, building strong connections in a safe place. We're here to help families like yours get the support you need to do well and stay strong.
What is an intensive outpatient program?
An intensive outpatient program (IOP) offers a step up from standard individual therapy, providing a higher level of support without the need for inpatient hospitalization. Our comprehensive program is held on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for up to 12 weeks. A personalized treatment plan will be developed to determine the number of weeks of treatment.
