The MedStar Health―Washington Hospital Center Residency Program in Obstetrics and Gynecology
Our residency program is unique in many ways. It is a residency program that matches a high volume of clinical experience with close supervision by attending faculty. Residents have exposure to a wide variety of gynecologic pathology and high-risk obstetrics in the context of a balanced teaching and service environment. The program is focused on meeting the needs and requests of its trainees. As such, residents play an integral role in structuring the didactic and clinical curriculum in which they learn. MedStar Health-Washington Hospital Center Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program combines all of the benefits of an intimate community training program combined with the resources of a major academic teaching center.
As an independent program, we have the flexibility to mold an individual resident’s experience to his or her needs. At the same time, we have the resources of our own departmental full-time faculty in addition to the faculty of the other MedStar based residency programs and the faculty of the MedStar Research Institute. Our program is committed to providing both a stimulating and humane setting in which residents can grow to become outstanding Obstetrician & Gynecologists.
Our program’s unique characteristics in conjunction with the multiple attractions associated with the Washington capital area makes our program an ideal site for post-graduate training in Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Curriculum
The curriculum is designed to meet the training objectives of the Council on Residency Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. As such, the program provides ample opportunities for residents to achieve the knowledge, skills, and behaviors essential to the practice of obstetrics and gynecology, and to the delivery of ambulatory primary health care for women.
The training provides residents experience in all areas of women's health, and prepares them for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology examination. Since 1997, the program has had a high pass rate on the written ABOG exam.
Conferences
Along with the Ob/Gyn residents’ clinical training, they participate in a comprehensive didactic program. This includes skills lab at our state-of-the-art Simulation Training & Education Lab (SiTEL), teaching rounds, clinical case conferences, interdepartmental conferences, specialty conferences, seminars and other functions held primarily for the benefit of the residents.

Research
All residents are strongly encouraged to be involved in a series of research projects throughout their training. The completion of at least one such project is a requirement for graduation.
The inclusion of research in the residency curriculum serves several purposes. First, it gives residents the opportunity to learn the principles of study design and statistical analysis. Second, it teaches residents to develop realistic research objectives and to allocate the necessary time for the project's progress and success. Finally, it gives residents added experience in public speaking and in the development of visual presentations.
