The MedStar Health—Georgetown University Hospital Breast-Body Imaging Fellowship Program
The Department of Radiology at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital offers a one year fellowship combining breast and abdominal imaging. The Betty Lou Ourisman Breast Health Center at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital provides an integrated multidisciplinary approach to complete breast care, seeing more than 16,000 patients a year. The Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center is the only designated cancer center in the area.
The fellows work closely with faculty in both radiology and their counterparts in surgery, oncology and pathology both in the course of clinical duties and in academic endeavors and regularly held conferences.
Curriculum
The fellowship is a combined breast-body program. It is composed of (13) 4-week rotations in women’s and abdominal imaging. The (6) 4-week blocks in breast imaging provides comprehensive training in all aspects of breast imaging and intervention, including screening and diagnostic 3D digital mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI (1.5T and 3T) and stereotactic, ultrasound, and MRI guided biopsies, as well as seed localizations.
The abdominal imaging component is designed to provide balanced, in-depth experience in all aspects of body imaging, and includes rotations on body MR (2 blocks), ultrasound (2 blocks), CT - 1 block, Elective (1 block) and Selective (1 block). While on US, the fellows participate in hysterosonograms, and may choose to participate in US-guided procedures, such as thyroid nodule, lymph node, and superficial soft tissue mass fine needle aspirations or core biopsies.
In addition to clinical duties, fellows are expected to participate in regularly scheduled radiology department and multidisciplinary conferences. Fellows are also encouraged to pursue research endeavors and given access to resources throughout the department and university.
