Advance Practice Provider Urgent Care Fellowship | MedStar Health
A healthcare provider treats a young patient in an urgent care setting.

The MedStar Health Urgent Care (MHUC) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Urgent Care Fellowship

The MedStar Health Urgent Care (MHUC) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Urgent Care Fellowship is a twenty-six-week (six-month) training program that offers a system wide orientation for new to practice APPs. It provides additional preparation to care for our complex patient population as well as the ability to work at the top of the APPs’ scope of practice. It builds confidence and prepares APPs as they enter clinical practice. The MHUC APP Fellowship is an accredited program through the College of Urgent Care Medicine.

Fellows are considered full-time MedStar employees with full benefits provided. Upon completion of the program, you will not have to reapply to work for MedStar Urgent Care.

Curriculum

The Urgent Care Fellowship Program aims to integrate the following six competencies into the curriculum:

  • Patient care
  • Medical knowledge
  • Practice-based learning and improvement
  • Interpersonal communication skills
  • Professionalism
  • Systems-based practice

Our competency-based education focuses on learner performance (learning outcomes) in reaching specific objectives (goals and objectives of the curriculum).

Clinical

The fellow will have one on one preceptorship with selected Urgent Care Clinical Instructors. They will learn through hands-on care of patients by seeing patients and then discussing with preceptors to formulate appropriate care plans. The fellow will experience varying degrees of independence throughout the program ranging from presenting every patient early on to solo practice during your last month.

You are expected to work 144 hours per month during the fellowship with 12 hours deducted for lectures and self-study time (132 hours in clinic). Daily chart reviews by your preceptor and an assigned Mentor are completed for real time feedback about your care documentation. Fellows will be required to write and present an article for possible publication in the Journal of Urgent Care Medicine based on a case they have seen during their clinical rotations.

Educational

You will have reading and web-based review assignments each week and weekly lectures/meetings will be held with the Program Directors or other leadership members to discuss assigned material. Most of the lectures are virtual with a few in-person lectures as well.

Fellows are required to complete the self-paced HIPPO Urgent Care and Pediatric Boot-camp courses in the first 5 months of the fellowship. This web-based program will be paid for by MedStar Urgent Care. You will be automatically enrolled in the course and receive your information at orientation. You will complete the urgent care assessment at the beginning of the program and then in the middle and end to see how much progress you are making.

Fellows will be occasionally required to attend monthly APP Emergency Medicine and Acute Care Post-Graduate Training lectures provided by MedStar Emergency Physicians (MEP) group during your training program.
