MedStar Health advanced practice providers are an integral part of delivering quality patient care across our Distributed Care Delivery Network. Our 1600 advanced practice providers include Anesthesia Assistants, Certified Nurse Anesthetists, Nurse Midwives, Nurse Practitioners, and Physician Assistants practicing at over 700 access points across our regional system, including our 10 hospitals.

Through service-line clinical practice councils, our physicians and APPs promote best-practice guidelines and initiatives for the medical care and safety of our patients. Lifelong learning and education are supported through the many offerings within MedStar Health including grand rounds, lectures, on-line modules, simulation labs, and skills practice. Our APPs are guided by MedStar Health’s SPIRIT values of service, patient first, integrity, respect, innovation, and teamwork.
Advanced practice provider education
Our advanced practice providers invest in the education of seasoned providers, new graduate hires, and APP students through supplemental educational sessions, mentoring, precepting, new-graduate training programs, fellowships and residencies.
Advanced practice provider student partnerships
APP students who have secured a preceptor for their clinical rotation will first need to complete a Student Placement Request Form.
Leadership and professional development
- MedStar Health Advanced Practice Advisory Council - The Council is composed of APP leaders across the MedStar system who influence APP workflow, collect and distribute information to APP groups, and provide expertise related to APP scope of practice. We also provide ad hoc opportunities for additional members to assist with subcommittee work in some fields where they have expertise and interest.
- Many APP leaders serve as members of clinical practice councils, medical executive committees and MedStar Medical Group’s Governance Council.
- LEAD (Leadership Excellence And Development) Program – early and future APP leaders are selected to participate in this 8 month long leadership program with other early physician leaders which covers various topics such as finances, legal, HR, change management, and more. The session culminates with testing or implementing a quality or operations project that teams identify and work on through the program.
- APP leaders throughout MedStar Health include directors, chiefs, and leads either on the departmental, hospital, regional, or service-line level.
